I looks possible that in the near future I may be able to upgrade from my Jet 1220VS and need some advice.
My thoughts are one of the following three.
Jet 1642EVS, I don't need the length but I like the price.
Nova DVR XP, I don't need the swivel headstock.
One Way 1224 looks like it would be perfect for me.

Would like to hear your opinions.

Hi Dick; I've had the Oneway 1224 for nearly 2 years now. I also have the 24" extension which I have never installed. I only turn pens, and the odd spindle. Small bowls may be in my future. I will never say never, but for me the 1224 is a dream.

I had a 1948 Delta Rockwell 12" x 36" prior to this.

I have the Jet 1642EVS, mostly because it was in my price range. The OneWay would have been sweet, but budget was another story. The Jet will handle small to big. the headstock slides, but doesn't swivel --- you can still slide it down to the end if you get into hollow forms and bowls. I've had mine since that model was introduced, and have only had to tighten the wire leads on the switch. Do not plug it into a GFCI circuit though -- you'll scratch your head for a while trying to figure out why it won't turn on. No motor, belt, bearing, or electronic problems. I'm still happy with it, and have never regretted this model. I have about 250# sand in a ballast box mounted on the legs, and have little vibration with bigger out of round turnings. If you have any specific questions, feel free to PM me.

edit: even if you don't need the extra bed length, it makes a great catchall for tools, blanks, sandpaper, etc., etc.

Dick, you have a short list with 3 very good lathes. I would put them in reverse order with the Oneway at the top .... but that Nova DVR XP would be pretty sweet too!

I have the NOVA DVR XP! It is a workhorse lathe! It does swivel and believe me, you will use it when the time comes! I also turn bowls and plates

Either way! The Nova or the Oneway are great lathes!

Wow this is kinda like comparing Toyota, Avalon and Lexus.
If I had my choice of any of those it would be the One Way.

I like all your choices any one of those will serve you well. Both the Jet and Nova go on sale couple times a year, have never seen any Oneway lathe on sale.

Bought my Jet 1642 before big price increase from Amazon.com, free delivery and $50 rebate. I messed around and did not get the rebate. Driver put lathe where it needed to be, so tipped accordingly.

Did buy a robust 6" tool rest to turn pens and other small items. Some folks prefer the 4" Robust for pens, am happy with the 6". JMHO, if only turn pens between centers without mandrel 4" better op, if use a mandrel 6" tad better. I turn a lot of other small stuff so like the 6" and have no problem turning pens between centers.

Before buying my Jet looked long and hard at Oneway 1224. Price of the Jet was the decider.

Good luck with whatever you decide on.

I have the DVR XP and have been pretty happy with it, but am ready to move up to either a Oneway 2436 or a Stubby S750. Based on footprint, other big lathes like 3520B or American Beauty won't fit.
