I am getting tired of the northeast and have been thinking about moving somewhere else. Anyone know of any properties down in New Orleans that need to be rebuilt and have some land around them? I don't want to be sitting on top of my neighbors. and don't want to hear them or really see them.

South Carolina has plenty of property like that. And we have all the humidity of New Orleans! :biggrin:
 
Neil, look a little north like at Shrevesport/Bossier City
OF 1/2 way between N.O. and Shreeves port at Natchitoches (I know it is spelt wrong)(pronounced nackodish by a friend from Shrevesport).

Anyway, been to both of those areas, and they are beautiful, but not underwate, and close enough to N.O. for an easy trip
 
Sorry, I'm no help Neil but, I sure hope you find what you're looking for. And, I believe you will. My daughter told me of such a place that is near Mobile. Good luck.
 
Funny you should ask. I am retiring and we are moving from NE Texas west to be nearer family. I have a 10 acre farm with a 3 bedroom brick house, very nice and a great woodworking shop with heat and air conditioning for sale. I hae not put it on the market yet because I will rtire in Oct. $135000

Very nice, high quality, upgraded place.

Look up Kenner and Slidell. Nice areas, property is cheap and not as much "stuff" to put up with as in NOLA. Both are close by and the fishing is better near Slidell.

AND your neighbors, who will not be really close by, will likely have as many weapons as you. They really appreciate the 2nd amendment in crawdad land!

Thanks everyone for the input. I am looking at NOLA for several reasons, the music, the food, and I was offered a very nice job down there. A lot of the guys I was tight with for years were from some swamp around there and I think maybe I just need a long vacation before I do anything drastic like sell the house while my wife is away.

And yes, I do love Mardi Gras. Beads for all.

Please, please, please, spend a week or two there first.
If you can take the SUB TROPIC climate, move to Texas. There are lots of places you can buy where you will not be bothered. The roads are great, shopping centers, Cowboy Churches, and Do Not Mess With Texas. Subscribe to Texas Monthly and it will give you an idea of what their culture is about.

We just moved from Texas, back to California because, as grandparents, there is not much we can offer the kids and cannot take the SUB TROPIC climate. But if you can stand the humidity, that State has allot going for it. Men are taught to be gentleman. In California I used to get "flipped' off three times a week. In Texas it took four years to reach that total and those people were from out of state. Freeways are smooth and new. Buildings are new. Houses are still within reason.

I was born and raised in Texas and after the navy lived in California for 15 years... loved both... but now that I'm retired, I'm in Tennessee.. (we moved up here to be nearer granddaughter, but she moved back to Illinois and it's too cold there for me)... Tennessee has a lot going for it, property is reasonable, there are still places in the woods and mountains where you can get lost and not have neighbors too close, people are friendly and taxes are low... (I pay a year in TN about the same as I paid a month in TX for property tax ) ... one of the few states left besides TX that doesn't have a state income tax.
 
Chuck dont forget New Hampshire no income taxes. Property taxes do hurt.

The new england area can get to you. More so being so close to NYNY. Take a week or 2 off go to the family homestead in the southeast and relax. Hell take the new bike out for a road trip and stop in and see some fellow turners in route.
 
Hey Neil; I feel ya man, the time I spent on the east coast in the AF drove me nuts, I couldn't wait to get back below that Mason Dixon Line. A good job offer in NOLA might not be a bad thing, but I was just curious, have you ever spend any real time in the city outside the French Quarter? It's a very different place for the locals than for a tourist. There are lots of benefits, but some serious drawbacks as well that need to be considered. The sum of the bennies minus the downers is different for every individual, but you wanna be sure you have a good handle on both when you make the calculation.

The problem areas in NOLA got a good flushing a few years back courtesy of Rita, and that seems to have helped, but not solved things completely. There are some deals on property now, but you really gotta trust your agent, and then still get a second and third opinion. Some property is dirt cheap because it will never be habitable again, and some just needs some TLC, and it's not easy to tell the difference.

Not a totally crazy idea, but one that needs some careful background work first. In any case, if you get into east Texas, give me a call and maybe we could get some time in on the 1000 yard range or something.

That's because everybody carries a gun in Texas. It's too easy to loose the finger when you flip someone off. :biggrin:
 
I made the move from central Ontario to Baton Rouge area in November 93, then moved to North Carolina in 97, but wanted to go back to Louisiana for several years after moving. Loved everything about it!

My truck didn't even have AC, but heat/humidity didn't bother me so much that I needed to install it -- so lived there almost 4 years without.

Best story about the truck -- first time I had to have the engine serviced in Louisiana, they called me back, asked what the plug coming out of the front grill was for, and if I needed it. They had never seen a block heater before, decided it wasn't supposed to be there, and had removed it even before they called me to ask.

Actually it was Katrina that flushed out NOLA.... Rita flushed Port Arthur to the west... and did a pretty good job on parts of Houston... I left the area the week after Rita blew in. The night she arrived I was up most of the night watching the street... everything I owned was packed in boxes and stacked in the garage just waiting for my moving truck.

When I first moved from Boston to NY the fast pace surprised me. But it
was 3 months later when I drove back up to Boston that I REALLY noticed
something. Once I got north of Hartford, the muscles in my neck started
to relax.. for the first time in 3 months. I spent a few days taking it easy
and headed back south. Then, about an hour from the city my neck muscles
started cramping up again. I guess I just got used to it after a while, but
once I moved up north again I slept a lot better..
 
Neil, not really sure what you are talking about tired of the Northeast. Heck, come on up further north. Plenty of woods, no neighbors, plenty of hunting and there are seasons...not hot, Hot and HOLY HELL HOT!

Hey! Just consider a little farther northwest.....reasonably close to DFW....just north of Ft Worth....access to all the fun stuff w/o the constantant hassel...winning Basketball team, world series baseball team.....spoiled football team....several woodcrafts and rocklers........I've got a 100 yr old victorian, 3 br 2 bath, seperate workshop, seperate barn on 1/2 city block....Decatur, TX.....I'll even throw in a chicken fried steak.
 
I just had a horrible thought, and couldn't relax till I tried to find out. This "good job" that somebody offered you in NOLA don't have anything remotely, vaguely, conceivably, to do with the NOPD, would it? If so, you better put that number on call blocking, and just go ahead and order some more clothes from LL Bean.

The NOPD has very little in common with a real police dept, and even less with being in the corps. I would say that the two are pretty much mutually exclusive, come to think about it. A career jarhead might just about as well take poison as try to fit in with that.

I saw a TV commercial for Sons of Guns, and have been recording them for about a month. Finally sat down to watch a few. Very entertaining! So far, the flame thrower rebuild was my favorite episode. :eek:

Neil is not a sports fan. Besides just a 3 hour drive north (a normal drive to the store in Texas) :) He has a city with 3 Superbowl Wins, 2 World Series Wins, 1 NBA title and 1 Lord Stanley's Cup win in the last 10 years.

Lance, Houma is one of the places I am considering, I have a couple of friends in that area that are pretty good shooters and I would like to shoot with them.

As far as Gators go, that is one of my favorite foods, along with grilled frog legs and crawfish.
 
Well Neal you'll fit right in over here you. Looks like you Know what good food is. Sounds like you're well on your way to being an honorary Coonass.
