We were talking to our contractor who uses an iPad for estimates. He would like a instrument with the iPad stylus on one end and a ball point on the other. Somehow the ball point needs to self protrude and retract, maybe with a twist while holding the iPad in the other arm.
Is there a kit already to assemble? Can we make a combination with a 7mm transmission and stylus end??
He does not like putting one instrument away while writing with the other.

I had been thinking of making one myself, but have not gotten around to trying yet.
There are stylus refills for pen kits, but I don't think those type work with newer touchscreen devices. Apparently you can make a DIY stylus using conductive foam like the stuff ic chips come packaged in. The grip part of the pen would have to be metal and connect to the foam so when you touch it the electrons from your hand pass through to the foam. It may be possible to make it come out of the cap of the pen or use a teachers pen kit, those are double sided.

John,

I dont think you are going to find it. It has to be a capacitive stylus to work with ipad or android.

Good luck
Tom

Thanks Tom. This is what I need to know. Now I am wondering about modifying the Capacitive Stylus and putting a pen part in the other end.

Some altered version of a teachers pen comes to mind.

There is only 1 captive stylus/pen that I know about, which is made by Monteverde, with a retail of $30. I tried to buy just the stylus tip from them (they're Nat.sales mangr. is a friend) and they will not budge. The grip area of the pen has to be conductive, and the stylus tip can not be too hard or else it will scratch the glass. Schmidt makes a stylus tip, but it is geared to the old pressure sensitive screens and will not work.

That one is a capacitive touch pen. It's description is wrong, however. It will work with Droid X and other Android devices (which have capacitive touch). Any device that requires your finger, instead of your finger nail is capacitive touch, as are table lamps that you can turn on by touching, and SawStop blade brakes  I bought 10 of them off ebay a while back, for $0.88 each.

I bought those too. Now to figure a way to incorporate the working end into the finial of a pen.

Not sure if this helps , if you can get the right stylus it is a dual action turn one way for a biro and the other way for a stylus ,or second color biro, uses the shorter type refills , HERE , cheers John

I have been working on a similar project myself.
I have been trying to work it from a Two-Way Style approach.
That has not worked out so well....lol
I purchased a bunch of I-pad / pod stylus thingies from ebay and have been working in modify those,
I may be getting close to a workable solution.
I think I am close and will keep you up to date if I make something worth mentioning work.
I have been super busy with my new Gillette Fusion razor design most of my attention as been geared towards it.
I think I really have an awesome platform to work from now.
Besides the regular retail razor style - most of you know I have the silver casting made and sold about 8 of those.
Since then I have developed a surgical Stainless Steel and have plans to move into a much less expensive metal and take it to the powder coating stage now.
The great thing that makes this piece unique have been the slight mold changes I have been able to make - the appearance of the head has been streamlined along with the practical side of putting one together from a turners point. I am finally 99% happy with the so called invention of changing a product...lol
I will hit the 100% mark once I complete the first batch of powder coating heads.

Sorry about the rabbit trail - I will keep you posted on my i-pad findings as they develop

GOOD LUCK!
Kevin

I use one like that with my iPad. The price on that link seems high. I ordered two for $5.99 from Buy.com a few weeks ago. It looks to me like you should be able to incorporate it into a slimline pretty easy. But I haven't tried.

Scott.

Get creative and combine two slimline kits... instead of a clip end, use another tube to combine two lower barrels.... like an oversized teacher's pen.

Even though you moved from California, back to Texas, from which we just moved FROM, your advice is sound.
I want the .88 cent pens to practice on.
