"What a great pen! I'll wear it out using it!"

Which would you rather hear after you give someone a pen? Why?

hmmm, that is tough, naturally i would like the customer to use the pen I make for them, but I would be saddened to know that someone bought one of my pens that I invested so much time into just so they could ruin it.
 
LOL I vote for Lenny's answer!

But I would rather see someone use my pen to death than have it sit on a shelf...but then again if they paid with cash or check I wouldn't feel bad if it was on a shelf either!
 
It depends on the person buying it. If they are a collector and keep their best under glass for display only then that is the highest compliment from that person. On the other hand, if they are not a collector then i want them using it all the time.

.....but cash is cash.

I do believe I agree , given these responses!
 
I'd rather hear "I'll be honest about what I dislike about it". I sell pens and if I give one away it is for "knocking the new off of it".

There is NO component set that I am married to. In fact, I dislike many things about MOST sets. Custom builds are as bad, because I am still at the mercy of the "mechanism" manufacturer....either the nib maker, the refill maker or the plastic gizmo in the centerband that comes loose.

I'd much rather hear how I can make it better.

I like this one best so far, but the best compliment that I personally have had - bar none - is not in spoken words necessarily. It is when a customer comes back to the same show, the very next year hoping to find you, maybe he/she lost your card, and is wanting to buy more of your writing instruments. I've been in this biz for just 2-1/2 years. My work is not near as good as a lot of others on this site....And I haven't done that many shows yet, but when I get that return customer wanting some more...! There just is nothing better than that! I have had this happen at least 6 times so far just in the past two months. (My wife is keeps track of this :smile:)

Randy, YOU are right! I had a customer from Massachucetts return the next year (Oct. show) specifically, she said, to buy another pen. She actually ended up buying three. :biggrin: That WAS a good feeling!:smile:
 
How about this one, a lady buys a pen from me for a gift for her sisters birthday, then she decides she likes it so much that she keeps it for herself and buys her sister something else! :present::smile:

That's a great one, I've had that happen.
 
I've had it happen both ways, and both are very high complements. It depends on the person and why they are putting it up or never put it down. One of the best compliments I think I have ever gotten was from the wife of a co worker. I didn't even know her her husband had gotten the pen as a gift for her. a few days later he brought me a card written with that pen. Basically from a total stranger and completely unnecessary, but it outlined everything that is so wonderful about the pens we make. Since then I have been convinced that these are really nice pens, even the bad ones are better than most.
In this case what made the compliment stand out was that it was sincere and took extra effort to not only say but to get that message delivered. someone was really moved by my work.
