Yesterday I had to remove one of the nastiest trojans I have dealt with

It is called "Windows XP Recovery"

If you see this pop up on your screen while on the web, DON'T CLICK ON ANYTHING. If you try to close it it will trigger it. If you try to move it, it will trigger it. If you try to cancel it, it will trigger it. Go up to the upper right hand corner of the MAIN window, the browser window, and close it with the X. If the Windows XP Recovery remains on the screen after the browser is closed, press CTL-ALT-DEL and bring up the task manager and end the application if you can.

If you touched anything on that screen, you can't open task manager. You can't get to your desktop. All your programs are blank in the start menu. In My computer, all the files are blank.

It disables all your antivirus programs. It won't let you open or download new ones. You can't see your programs in Safe Mode.

It is a real nasty. If you run into it, PM me and I will send you removal instructions.

Sharon,
I totally sympathize with you. Went thru this same trojan a month or so ago. Ended up hiring a PC guru and the only thing he could do was reload my machine. A real bummer.
As you suggested, there are removal instructions now, but they have only come out recently.
Glad to hear you got it cleared and back on line.
It will reappear - just don't respond in any way - I've seen it a couple of times since - it does everything to hide on your machine, sleep awhile and then rear it's ugly head. :at-wits-end:

I had it happen to my work laptop last summer and twice in my home machine. I now have Cox tech at my disposal for a slight fee, to clean it out any time it rears it's ugy head. Good luck to all.

My wife got this one a few months back and I ended up having to rebuild her computer...it was defeating all my attempts to remove it.

It blew past current virus defs and MS Defender.

Sharon,
I had a run in with this on my wife's computer... I followed all the instructions to remove it and was totally unsuccessful... I wound up going into the "safe" mode and doing a restore to a previous date... that got rid of it and haven't seen it back since... it's a nasty nasty.....

The latest incarnation deletes all your restore data! You can't restore back to an earlier date.

Amen, both my laptop and PC were infected with it, nothing could be done by me both units were taken to a shop and repaired and had Malware and spybot installed on both.

Any chance you know where they got the trojan?

I'd like to test our systems at work to see if they stop it.

Was hit with this virus as well this week. Did all I could with it so had to send it to the repair shop. It will also attack any external drives connected to your PC. So to get to websites and email I'm using my iPhone. Ugh!
