No good news but I did successfully stop a sent to Canada(not my pith, it is still safe) Using the tracking number to locate it the Postal service caught it before the border and had it returned to me. It cost me the shipping amount I had to eat but I got the package back anyway. I spent lots of time on the phone sweet talking everyone I spoke to to get it done. It might be worth a shot if you can catch up to it. They told me I was very lucky and it was an unusual request to do. I think had there not been the strike, they would have just laughed at me, probably did anyway.
 
Had a package all wrapped and printed the postage and was ready to have it picked up for shipping to Peter ( wood-of-1kind ) when he contacted me to hold it. Just in time as the postman came about an hour later.
 
Ken - I would think that Parliament will step in pretty quick before it goes too long. I would assume that it would fall in with jobs like pilots and other essential jobs that have an overall effect on the country's economy.
 
Rotating strikes

The Postal strike is not a nationwide strike, but a series of rotating strikes of 24 hour duration. The workers were on strike here in Victoria today, but will be back at work tomorrow. Don't panic, at most there will be a day or two delay and delays in mail delivery is the norm here anyway.
 
That's the north american way of doing business anymore. You strike but don't want to hurt the business. You go to war, but don't hurt the enemy until he kills you first. Doesn't matter if you are Canadian or American, we do these things the same. Too sensitive anymore.

It's a little more complicated. In the past we have had full blown strikes that last for more than a month or two but that was a while back and we (the country not me personally) are a long way from a full blown strike at this point. When legislated back to work they defied the order even when the Union Leader got jailed. These kind of disputes are usually settled by arbitration and mediators. Provisions are always made to make sure the pension checks and the like get delivered though.

Strikes and lockouts are part of life. We live through it and my recycling box takes longer to fill. :smile:

Thank goodness for Canadians being a bit more sensitive about things like the strike than their American brethren. But like Jeff said we've all gotten a bit to genteel with things like strikes and wars. I remember when the object of either was get the suckers to their knees and make them beg to get you back or to surrender. My goodness we have forgot a lot of hard learned lessons.

That's one I've tried to figure out for years... the French are notorious for their one hour or one day strikes.... they will announce it two weeks in advance, then at the appropriate hour everyone leaves the job until it's supposed to be over then back to working... Italians have done this too... when I was in international shipping used to drive me bonkers... one day I just stayed there... :biggrin::biggrin:

Count on the workers coming out on the 'short' end of the stick on this dispute. Volume has gone way down due to 'other' methods of 'delivering' information (ie electronic bill payment). About the only thing that I get delivered from Canada Post is 'junk mail'. I do need these guys to sort things out so that I can continue to make and receive small packets in particular to my US neighbours.

The original purpose of strikes was to inform the public of the poor treatment the workers were enduring. This is why they had placards with their grievances and they stood outside the employers' building.

Over the years, the strikers became more hostile. I have had to deliver copy products, walking through picket lines---fortunately, I was MUCH younger. The people on those lines certainly were NOT looking for my support of their cause---instead they hoped to "shut down" their employer. Which would lead to lost accounts, and less income for the employer, therefore they would need FEWER workers----needless to say, this line of logic did NOT impress them.

But, they let me pass through---I'm sure the tire iron I was carrying with my delivery had nothing to do with their ultimate graciousness!!

Later edit: As I recalled this, I realized this particular event took place in Racine. The plant has since been leveled and the company sold, no more production at that location. I guess those laborers won.

I am still getting mail, slower by a day or two, but still working. The rotating process is fine with me, they have a voice and the people who need the mail the most (elders, small business, remote locations) seem to be coping, bills still in my mail box and the world will not end becasue of this. Last full blown postal strike here was 14 years ago, time will tell with this one, but they are negotiating and have not stopped since the action took place.

I received a box from Dawn and Ed just yesterday!
 
If this is slow, I like it

Just recieved a package today from Alan Lacer in Wisconsin. Mailed on June 2, went through customs and was at my door in Victoria, BC before noon today.

If this is slowing down mail delivery, may they continue for as long as they like.
 
Strike doesn't bother me much. I shipped a package yesterday and it was delivered today. Oh wait that was by FedEx. Cost me $12 by the weight and size it would have cost me double by the post office. The only time it hurts is when I want something from outside country. The delivery services are required to charge for clearing customs. Anywhere from $20 to $40, post office doesn't have to charge. So now those of you in the U.S. who sell to us know why we want things shipped by U.S.P.S. no surprise charges.
Not sure what FedEx or UPS would charge for delivering a letter but probably more than 60 cents.
 
They really aren't proving anything at this point. On the news this morning is that volume has gone down because people have gone to alternative methods for delivering items with the threat and subsequent rotating strike so they are now cutting back on staff at sorting facilities. The only point they are making is that they are not needed as much as they think they are.

The good news is that the rotating strikes are over, but the post office has now locked out the workers. Now there is no mail.
Sorry if you have mail in the system. This doesn't look lik it will be over soon.
 
Yep, just yesterday mailed two packages to Peter (wood-of-1-kind), guess they will be either coming back to me or?????????

I will call our Prime Minister and demand an end to this folly. If he (Mr. Harper)
legislates an end to this strike, I may make him a special pen:rolleyes:

A question. I printed my shipping labels for a flat rate international box. It printed out 4 copies and I didn't know what to do with them, so I wound up going to the PO and they labeled it for me.

In the future, what do you do with the 4 copies. I know one is mine, but what do you do with the other two extras?
 
All postal work has stopped as of today!
No more rolling strikes throughout Canada, just a general everyone stop working!
It is a real PITA!!!!

Nothing coming in or going out...

Apparently the government is going to step in and tell them to get back to work.
Someone said it had already cost Canada Post $100 million since these strikes started!

Three copies go into the envelope on the box.
They suggest you also write the address under the envelope, in case the three copies get lost. Of course, if they get lost, there is no way to know where the package came from or is going to--it is lost!!
