Paypal fruad....The scum bags got me!!!!!!

Well some of the fine people in this world that lie/cheat/steal finally got me.Was a matter of time with all this techy banking we now a days.I had two charges from Canada come through my paypal account a total of almost $300.They got my card number and made a card to swipe with,these guys will do anything.Well it will cost me a bunch of BS dealing with paypal and my bank,weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.I'd like to get a hold of the scum bag that did this he would regret every second of it for every minute of his life.Well rant is over,Victor

That really sucks. I just went through this with Paypal too. Had to make a police report before they believed that it wasn't me. Took 3 weeks.
 
Sorry this happened to you guys.

That is exactly why I DON'T use paypal or any other online payments.
 
Were these payments made with the PayPal charge card or direct transfers out of funds on deposit at PayPal?

To aid myself and others on what to watch out for, could you elaborate on how they managed to get money from you via PayPal. I always considered it pretty safe if I did not authorize a payment.

I don't understand! How did someone get your credit card number
from your paypal account? Were you buying or selling something?

I have used a paypal account for almost 4 years now and never had a glitch. Of course I don't use mine for anything fance, just paying for products I buy and accepting money from others when I sell something.
 
Victor, I use Paypal all the time. I never had a problem. I do know there have been a few banks and clearing houses lately that have been hacked. Not paypal, the banks. Ask your bank clearly and they have to tell you. Is it you or a clearing house that was hacked? I hope you get it all cleared up.

There are ways to protect yourself from most Paypal "issues". Don't link an active bank account (or at least don't use one that has any money in it). Only use a credit card with good buyer support. And never EVER leave money in your Paypal longer than you have to.

That said, you can still get burned. It sucks. Sorry it happened to you.

I have no idea how they got my number,but they did.It was done with my credit/debit paypal card,that I use often(rather then wait for money to go to a bank account I use it like it meant to be used).Basically this stuff is just going to happen i have had a paypal account for 5+ years and nothing has ever went wrong.Paypal was great about it and took one charge off the top the other they wait to see what the place that gets billed for the transaction will do.I had about $20 in my account so that was not an issue(lucky for me),I did have it linked to a bank account but had them freeze the account straight away.It is a inconvenience for sure,but that is part of doing business in this technology age(everything is electronic).Victor
 
It may be the debit that is the weak link. There has been several articles and news reports on TV about how easy it is to swipe someones debit number and pin number.
 
I didn't realize that PayPal offered a debit card, but I see it on their site and understand how it works.

So what happened was that someone obtained your number and produced a duplicate card? Then they used the card for a standard in-person purchase that required a swipe? That is pretty sophisticated to be able to make a duplicate card, they could have just used the number to place an online order, but that tends to give away too much location info. How do they get the CVN number? Probably they don't get the CVN number and that is why they can only use the dupe card for an in-person swipe.

Obtaining the number is not all that difficult, there are magnetic readers that can read the numbers while the card is in your pocket. Much more common is when a clerk or waiter copies the number when a purchase is made.

I didn't fall for the scam but I could have. I had 25 rolls of gold chain for sale on craigslist and I got this legal looking page from Paypal saying I had money. It looked real from Paypal. The note said since the buyer was requesting security for his money I should mail the package first then send Paypal the shipping number and they would release my funds to my account. Yeah, you know I did BS. What gave the page awat was it came from HTTP: and not HTTPS:.
Strange thing though, I have contacted paypay 4 times to see if it was legit and they have never answered my mail
 
There are card readers now that can scan a card while it is still in your wallet. All they have to do is get near you and it will pick up all the info they need to make a duplicate card. Anyone can buy one off the internet and anyone can use one anywhere, they fit in the palm of your hand. So much for credit card security.
 
OK so the fraud was not through PayPal, it just happen to be the card number that was stolen was a PayPal debit card. I was trying to figure out how it was PayPal fraud.
 
Noone fear, I am willing to pay everyones debt, just as soon as the check comes in. I was just informed that I won the Europein(their spelling) National Lotary(their spelling), I have just sent them all my info, you know, the usual, SS number, bank account numbers, and full and complete power of attorney for my estate since they seem so anxious to get the money to me. How much is 213 trillion euros in US dollars?




















Just kidding, I didn't send them my information, just the ones that link back to a certain agency I used to work for. Never send anyone any info over the internet, your just looking to get taken if you do.

It's my understanding it has to be one of the newer card with the RF (?) chip to do this. Anyone know for sure?
 
I will explain what happened to me in another post as to not hijack this one.

That is my understanding. The cards will also have the RFID symbol.

That has been my understanding as well - I'm not sure they work but they are advertising metal card wallets that are supposed to defeat that.

That being said I've had two CC numbers stolen - neither directly from me.
The first one was picked up with a 20 yearl old address. The second was current one had two charges made the other had 1. In both cases the merchant posted refunds.
 
Humm...

Given that this happened to two members at nearly the same time, what do you suppose the odds are that the source of the problem is a site that pen makers would frequent? Perhaps the two victims should compare notes to see if they have any similar transactions.
