Hey everyone. My wife and I are moving to the Phoenix area near the end of May. I know there are a few members around there. Hope to be able to meet up at some point!

By the way, if anyone has any suggestions for good things to do near I40 on the way out from SC, let me know. We are hoping to hit bits and pieces of old Route 66.

Lots of fun on OLD 66. Have a safe move. It should be good and hot by then. I think they hit 100 yesterday.

I'm ready for some good old dry heat.

STUCKEY'S

Any one in particular? =)

You'll be with-in 3 miles of me off of I-40, not a pretty site:rolleyes: but not 1/2 bad either:wink:.

OK City is right around our halfway point and I was planning to stay the first night somewhere around there. We are only taking one car out at this point. Any recommendations on a safe place to stay in that general vicinity?

I'd love to stop by and meet you if you are around and awake when we drive by. Always cool to meet one of those IAP celebs =)

There are several good hotels right off I-40 on Meridian avenue. Hotels and eating places close together. If you come through too late for meeting in the evening, could do breakfast! I live and work not too far from that area. Will send a pm or email with contact info later.

Joel, Sandia Crest, NM (10K+ft) is the first real mountain after the plains. You can drive up or take the ariel tramway. Its spectacular at sundown. Be sure to stop at Old Town Albuquerque and have dinner at Sadie's Restaurant on N. 2nd st for some fantastic red chile. All of these are right off I40.

Sounds great, thanks. Would love to do that.

Gonna miss you in SC. Wish we could have met up at Bruces or something. Safe travels!

I'm trying to get Bruce to clean the grill off and have us over before I leave =)

I live here in North Phoenix pm when you get in. When you hit Albuquerque there is a place just off the freeway called Rudy's BBQ great food and lots of it. On I40 in Az you have the Meteor Crater, Painted Desert and Petrified forest and a few other places along the way. Have a safe trip.

Having lived in Phoenix, and having done most of the state treasures, the list can get pretty long! Just before you get to Flagstaff, you can stop and stretch your legs on around 180 steps down and back up at Walnut Canyon National Monument, right off of I-40. Or, you can go a bit North, bout 5 miles or so, and do the Wapatki National Monument drive. At both, you can get up close and personal with ancient indian ruins.

Walnut Canyon is my wife's favorite, and we cannot visit AZ without stopping there. If you do stop and wander the trail, (remember those steps I mentioned earlier? You gotta go down 'em to get to the trail! Then back up when you are done...TAKE WATER!) make sure you watch the canyon walls opposite where you are at. We spent 4 hours on a trail 1 mile long, looking for the ruins on the other side! We found more than 40! You can do the whole thing in about an hour, tho, and still get a good look at the ruins, as you will be right in them on the trail!

If you want more things to see and do once you actually live in Phoenix, PM me and I can make you a pretty looooong list!

Enjoy the heat!

I have gone to OKC many times for work and staying along the Meridian strip. There is pretty much everything a traveler would need along Meridian and MacArthur (sp?), a mile to the west, parallel to Meridian.

Well at least wave as you head to Pauls:biggrin::wink::rolleyes:

You'll love Phoenix. I still own a home there in Surprise, NW of Phx. Don't be scared of the heat. Seven to 12% humidity makes up for 110 degrees. Have a safe trip, it's a long drive. Once there you will see so many things you won't know where to start. Pro football, baseball and basketball. Fishing everywhere. Snow sking 2 hours north. 5.5 hours to Vegas and about 6 hrs to the Pacific ocean. Wish I was going with you.

I didn't care as much for PHX, but loved Tucson... Phoenix is a big city and I kinda likened it to Houston in the desert..not as big, but some of the pollution. Tucson is a quaint little city with all of the amenities you could want... Arizona as a state is awesome!! If I had had the funds, would have chosen Sedona as a retirement place...

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. This makes me even more excited to go. I just have to make it through four more weeks of classes... All good things are worth waiting for, right?
