Need some Advice on Powder Coating Systems

I am considering spending even more money on my turning addiction.
I don't think there is every going to be a stopping point.

I am going into clear casting along with transparent color casting.

I have been spray painting my tubes - which is fine - but I came across the idea of powder coating.

It seems for about $100 $200 you can get a fairly nice powder coating system.

$200 to color my pen tubes seems a bit excessive – however if this system will allow me to customize complete pen kits that may be the deciding factor.

Can you powder coat pen components from any type of pen kit?

Example – Say I have a Sierra Pen kit and I want it to be Orange.
Will the components take the powder coating?

Please fell free to also include any additional advice on the subject.

Kevin: Check the Eastwood web site. It has a tutorial that helped me understand what it will and won't do.

I powder coat tubes. I clear powder coat rifle shells. I have tried powder coating pens parts and don't consider my results with pen parts to be acceptable. But, others may be better at powder coating pen parts than I have been.

I was watching several videos on YouTube - My understanding that as long as it is metal it will take the powder...
I was hoping someone here might have some first hand experience.

I also read a past thread where you were looking into a system also - Did you ever decide on one? If so what are you using it for? and would you recommend the Eastwood? I found a Used / New still in box kit system for about $130 - For an additional $50 I could buy the new adjustable voltage system - Being able to adjust the voltage allows better coverage depending on the size of the piece being coated.

The Clear coating sounds like it would be a big plus for improving the finish & durability.
Do you reccomend the Eastwood system - Waht is your opinion between the regular system vs the adjustable voltage system. Is it worth the addtional cost?

I use the powdercoating system from Harbor Freight. I have no knowledge of any other system having not used others. I do not use the powder from HF. Powder is purchased from http://caswellplating.com

I have the harbor freight powder coating unit still new in the box, i read up on it an wound up buying the hot coat kit from eastwood as well. i love the simplicity of it and its fairly easy to clean too. You can powdercoat just about anything, at my shop we have shot it on wood and it has stuck for a few years now.

if you really want a good spray gun look for a gamma gun, but they are thousands. your best bet is to get buddy buddy with a local powder coating shop and do what i do. i leave them a bunch of parts and when they get a cool color to shoot they blast the parts of the pen. its kind of like a scratch off ticket everytime i get a call to come pick up parts:biggrin:.

speaking from experience, you can get a good finish with almost every gun the most important thing is the prep work and cleaning the parts, you have to get heat tape for your threads certin chemicals or acids to etch and clean the metal and use a good quality powder. Find a local TCI or Tiger powders rep and ask them for 1 lb. samples. they willl last you a while and always have neat looks to them.

Kevin, I use the harbor freight powder coat system and get my powder coat from Rosies. I do a lot of clear over bullets and color powder coat all my pen tubes that are going to be cast. I have had no problems with the cheaper HF system.
 
I have the Craftsman System and love it, I am now playing with the podercoating with a airbrush and some powder water to thin it to flow thru the air brush. can find a good price on ebay, might take a few times to get it for the right price
