I recieved a job offer today for a position in Detroit, MI. 2500 mile move without moving expenses. I have been out of work since 1/1/11.
They want a decision Friday morning (crazy government job). So I'm calculating, and talking to SWMBO.
It is a GS-12 Information Technology position; permanent career (if your familiar with Gov't jobs)

Got a LOT of thinking to do before I have to make the phone call at 6 AM tomorrow morning.

I'm also in the running for a position at Denali, National Park, AK. It is a GS-09 (way less pay) and currently funded for 10 months after that who knows... They pay moving expenses but they have 2 more interviews to do and those won't be done for another week.

Good Luck on your decision. I work in the IT Field also, been fairly lucky considering how the banking industry has been, but been here for 11 years and through 4 mergers, knock on wood.:wink:
 
good luck in the decision, would be hard to turn down a solid offer of G12 step 1 with the increase for the area

could always write off the moving on your fed tax

If it helps, and i Am sure you know this...but I read an article in the USA Today yesterday that was talking about Detroit and how the population has dropped 25% over the last decade. Not sure, but that means to me that the real estate market should be great for buyers!
 
Well, that's a tough choice. I mean, Detroit is pretty much a toilet in the middle of the flush cycle, but housing will be cheap. The weather sucks and the taxes are horrendous, but at least the school system is pathetic.

I'd pretty much sell a kidney to keep from ending up there, if it was me, but then I'm a 4'th generation native Texan and intend to make sure my grandkids make the 6'th. You may not have as severe an aversion for being north of the Mason Dixon line as I do.

My advice, as a total stranger, is to take the Detriot job. It is an official job offer and a better payer, and longer term guarantee than then 2nd job. To me its more of a sure thing. If you hold out for the 2nd, you may not get it, or lose it after 8 months, and then you will be upset with yourself for not taking the 1st offer. The move will cost several thousand dollars, but that is much better than being out of work. Pray about it! He knows more than me :)
 
We wish you the best of luck, whichever route you finally take. With a family in tow, you have to think about the future for your family. With the G-12 you have your foot in the door with a possibility of advancement and / or transfer. Say your prayers and include your bride in the decision making. Me, I'd go for Alaska, but I am 67, no kids at home and I have never been there. Do not take this as any kind of recommendation for the home of Sarah Pallen.

Personally, I'd take the GS-12.. Regardless of all issues Michigan is having with the new governor We have many a pen turner in that side of the state.

I didn't say that Detroit is "pretty much in the toilet", I said that it "is pretty much a toilet" You may take as much issue with it as you think you can carry, but please quote me correctly.
 
Best of luck with your decision, With the current economic situation in Detroit the housing situation is a buyers market. My BIL broke down and had to stay just outside Detroit for a couple days waiting for a part for his truck. He found that the prices on most things were noticably less than what we pay in Maine.
 
COMMUTE

Not a bad offer - and Trust me on this, Detroit won't be as bad as it is being painted and my guess is there are still some decent suburbs or small towns not to far away that will let you pick a decent spot to live. There are such places around every big city I've been around. Even those in Texas.
 
wow ... detroit vs Denali .... geographically, its an EASY decision..... the other aspects make it a tough decision.

I wish you the best! Its hard out there right now (my better half is still looking :mad: )
 
The city of Detroit may not be the best place to live, it is a nice place to visit, if the schools can be fixed the population may stabilize, there are many suburbs with easy access to the city via expressways, the weather can be challenging at times but usually not extreme. There is a wide range of recreation possibility, the great lakes and a large number golf courses offer a lot of Summer recreation, and skiing, ice fishing, snowmobiling and wood working are good winter recreation.

I'd go with the sure job in MI. There is a 1:3 shot with the other job. Good luck and let us know..
 
In these economic times go for the pay and bennies. Leave the family in Washington till spring/summer or untill schools out. Then look for a place. There are some nice place to live even in Detroit or vacinity. Good luck in your decision.
 
I live a little bit nw of Detroit and yes it is both a toilet and also in a toilet with a nasty ring around it. BUT the suburbs are nice if you get into the right one, I happen to live on a nice quit lake in an area of little crime with a good school system. If it weren't for the snow I would be very happy. Come to michigan
 
Wow Mark, that is a tough decision. I wish you could come back to California. I assume the Michigan job is federal government, if so can you take it and look to transfer to another area? Good luck and we will keep you in our thoughts.

I grew up in the Detroit suburbs and I for one think it's a nice place to live. My brother and sister and their families still live there so I get back often. Sure there are some bad areas, just as any big city has bad areas, but the majority of places are nice and there are several truly superb neighborhoods that would rival the best of anywhere else in the country, including the public schools. Particularly in the western and northern suburbs, there are many places I would be glad to call home (no offense to the East siders out there along the river).

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and prayers. Still debating. Since the kids are grown, no worries about the school system. Of course, they may tag along. Me thinks we may have to try a bit of reverse psycho thinking. If the kids don't move out, maybe mum and dad should move out. :biggrin:
back to my pro and con list.
 
I would go with the Detroit, there are other federal job openings, you may have to spend a few years there but the possibilities over long term for other job opportunities are out there. At least you would be a GS12, and have some security. And there are possibilities of being able to transfer, for 2 or 3 years one can live in just about anywhere. There are a lot of government agencies, I went through 4 before I found a place and job that I liked. Now retired doing what I want when I want.
