I have a very wealthy friend that i would like to make a pen for. His big hobby is flying his Citation Mustang (10 million dollar jet). I think he would enjoy a pen that was themed around that, not really much to go by there so i guess i am looking for ideas for a Jet inspired pen. I have a pretty wide range of metal/woodworking tools but i am fairly new to pens, been turning since october of last year. If anyone has anything they could suggest or pictures to go by of a jet themed pen any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you ahead of time.

I think the materials used to make the aircraft would be appropriate. Aluminium (7075 or 7050 series, not the 6061 since very little of it is used in aircraft), or a composite like carbon fibre. Otherwise a decal of the plane on the pen might make him happy.

does his jet have a special paint scheme? If so you could replicate that. You could use decals to add the plane logo, etc. If he want to carry and use the pen then you are a bit limited with regard to the shape. Just a guess but I would think pilots would like click pens, let's you keep one hand on the yoke. A clip pen leave less room to be creative, what type of pen does he want?

Update: You could put his tail numbers on the pen as a decal, that would personalize it!

Update: Go here (http://www.cessna.com/citation/mustang/mustang-documents.html) and download the Mustang Spec & Desc. doc. There is a very cool mustang image there, again decal it. Also find out if he has the high sierra edition because that has a different logo.

I was thinking along these lines as well, but I was going to suggest that you do a segmented pen to incorporate whatever colour/design he has on his aircraft; with the segmentation to be done along the length of the pen. The tail numbers could be added with decals, or have them engraved and then use a good infill to colour them. If you're trying to match a multi-million dollar plane, you will want to pull out all the stops.

Good luck. Looking forward to seeing the finished product with a picture of the plane along side.

Thanks for the great ideas! keep them coming.... I like the segmented colors idea, no set style of pen yet and i would rather not ask him its going to be a present.

Mike thanks for that post, that was some amazing creativity, i would not even know where to begin lol. amazing but a little hard to carry.

How about a pen shaped like a jet engine. Skiprat can help with that one. He built a Saturn V rocket that looked real.

Exotic Blanks has a nice lucite that looks like clouds. That would make a nice aviation theme pen. I would put it in a maple or oak box with a picture of his plane including NC number lazered on the lid of the box.
