Just wanted to share a good story. About a year ago I did my first casting demo for my local pen turners club. The owner of the store and I had been talking back and forth about casting blanks and he was very interested in making his own to sell instead of buying from the big vendors. So he sat in on the demo and it helped him fill in the blanks (no pun intended, but useful ) on gel timing and swirling. He has a plastics background and very knowledgeable about resin, but the color aspect wasn't there yet. So after the demo he got to work trying things out. After a whie he got his system in place and started carrying his own line of PR blanks in his store calling them Rhinoplastic. Well...several months later I open my new PSI catalog and what do I see, yup, Rhinoplastic blanks! So when I had my second casting demo this past Sat. I had a gift sitting on the table with a nice note of thanks. It was 5gallons of Rhinoplastic resin! He didn't owe me anything, but I appreciated it all the same! So I wanted to give a public thank you to Karl for his kind gesture. I wish you all the luck and growth of your business!

On a side note: A while back someone posted a question about the type of resin that made rhinoplastic blanks. At that time I posted that he used Silmar 41 to make them. When he first started out that is the resin that he used. Since then, and I'm not sure when it changed, he has had a special resin custom made for him. I do not know what it's called but in his letter to me he said that it has the same properties as Silmar and uses the same catalyst, but is different in formula. So I just wanted to correct my previous statement. I also want to be clear that I am in no way trying to get credit for what Karl has done. He learned the same as everyone else in that room and took it to higher levels. I have nothing but admiration and respect for him doing so. It makes me happy to see small business grow in this economy. We have Karl and his rhinoplastics now being available worldwide, Bruce119 and his $blanks, Toni and her polyclay blanks, JohnU and his feather blanks, the list goes on and on. Me, I'm content for now being a small time blank designer.

Jonathon,
I have to agree with all you said. A few weeks ago, I emailed a question to Karl at Rhinoplastics, regarding the "threadability" of their blanks. I basically wanted to know how the plastic holds up to tapping and die-ing for kitless type pens. A week later Karl had sent me 3 blanks to try out. It's the paying it forward idea that will keep people coming back. I regret I didn't publicly post a thank you sooner, but Thank You Karl and Rhinoplastics!!

That is really a neat story Jonathan. Reminds me of the wise old saying about "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."

Have you tried threading them yet? That would be a big thank you to Karl if they do in fact thread well and hold up.

Mike,
Hopefully I will be able to turn one down and thread it. They appear to be an excellent canidate. I have been tuning tenons on a bunch of cutoffs to see how each material holds up to the process. Some do well, some don't. I will post results as promised.

And by the way they are beautiful looking blanks.

I'd like to know as well Cris. Since I sell the majority of the blanks I make I'll still be using my silmar for customer blanks. So that gives me 5gallons of "Play time" for personal blanks. I'm getting into threading and all that so I'm anxious to hear your results as well!

Karl is a very good friend of mine and I work with him on many apects of RhinoPlastics. When he is not at his store in Columbia, SC (WoodZone), he is in the plastics lab mixing resin. I swear, it reminds me of the old Dunkin Donuts commercial ('time to make the donuts") where the guy is so busy that he runs into himself as he is leaving home. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=petqFm94osQ
