Well, I ordered one of these from csusa a while ago, came a few days ago, finally got to use it. Its just a plastic ring slipped over the headstock thread. Until now, I had to use Tommy bars and a 3' dowel to get enough leverage to get it off. Now, its just like a large nut and bolt, even after I turned 15 pens o it. If you get a chuck for a lathe, spend a couple bucks and get one of these. It makes a huge difference.

I've never had a problem, and my current lathe doesn't even have a headstock wheel. A quick snap with the tommy bars and off it comes. I've seen those and always wondered if they were really needed. I guess they are!

You can pick up nylon washers at the home improvement centers for pennies... if you need them.

You can also use Delrin to make them.
