My brother was at my house earlier today. He asked me to turn him a cigar pen like the one I did for our father, only difference is he wanted rosewood. Everything was going just beautifully when I pressed in the nib and piece that holds the trans. I installed the refill and realized it was sticking out WAY too far. I put the nib hardware on the short blank. I guess I spent too much time flapping my gums about what I was doing that I forgot to pay attention.

It should be easy to take apart and reassemble. We all have learning experiences...

I bought the big set of punches just for such an ocassion. Yes, they have been used way too many times here.:redface::wink:

Got that right!!!

Only used my punches a time or two, but first time pays for the set of punches in irritation and frustration saved. The older set that only worked on 7mm and one other size has saved me many times in my earlier days of pen making.

Actually what these punches are is a slightly modified transfer punch (no sharp tip on dead center).

When you go to use them, wipe them down well. They frequently have a thin coat of some dark, nasty oil, which is a rust prevention measure. The stuff leaves awful marks on wood, clothing, and everything it comes in contact with including your fingers which pick it up and spread it around. A little de-greaser, even alcohol helps clean this stuff off.
Great investment. They work and they work well.

Thanks for the advice on using punches. I don't have any yet so I had to use screwdrivers. I was, however, able to save the pen. I'm glad I did, too. It was made with a blank I got from cnirenberg (thank you, Cris) and a kit from Aggromere (thank you, Peter). I haven't yet decided about posting a pic because the finish isn't quite up to my standard. Around the nib, the finish didn't polish, no matter how much I sanded. For the life of me, I couldn't figure out why.

Which reminds me, I need to look up the specs on the One Piece cigar pen. I need to know how to measure the correct length and that has me a little concerned.

Are you sure that you did not sand thru the finish? That seems to be one of my favorite things to do and leaves a dull spot that will not shine. Just a thought. Respectfully submitted.

After what some of the other guys said, I'm pretty sure I did sand through the finish. Oh well, I'll just take the thing apart again, put it back on the mandrel, sand it down, and refinish it. I'm pretty sure I'll like it better after all that effort.
