My neighbor owned a custom closet company and recently sold it for a gazillion dollars. He signed a "no compete" clause, so he can't work.

The economy claimed my real job as a general sales manager several months ago. While I have been without work, I have been teaching my neighbor to make pens.

A few days ago, he came by and wanted to look at my scrap pile. Since I have been making pens, a little luthier work and repairing furniture, my shop had gotten really messy.

He took my scraps and made me a shop table. He delivered it unfinished and without drawer fronts. It looked so good, that I had to paint it and put a "CA" finish on the top to preserve it.

As you say, no pictures...didn't happen. Here is my shop table made completely from scraps....PRICELESS!

It has six 24" deep drawers on the front side and shelving on the back side, and wheels, so I can put a car in the shop just by moing it forward. What a GREAT NEIGHBOR!

What a great looking work bench!!! Be sure and cover it up when you use it to keep it looking wonderful.

"CA" ... really???

No... It just looks like CA. It is pour on epoxy. I love that stuff. It's cheap, and it self levels. Just pour it on, squeege it out, and let it dry. It is the same as 60 coats of poly. The cool thing about this stuff is than WHEN you make a booboo...just put another coat.

I thought about doing REAL CA, but even at Monty's pricing, puting 60 coats of CA on a workbench this big would have required getting a loan:). I had the epoxy sitting in a paint cabinet ...getting old.

After the epoxy was put onto the table, I found an 8' self-adhesive measuring tape that I could have epoxied underneath the finish. DO YOU KNOW HOW USEFUL THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN? Oh well, the reason I need the table in the first place was that I couldn't find SH$$.

That is a lovely bench and the finish on the top is unbelievable. I would be terrified of putting anything on it for fear of scratches.

Thanks for sharing.

Is that an old door? If so, it is an amazing use of reclaimed wood!! That is a beautiful bench! All it is missing is an ink stain from a bottle spill, some nasty perfectly round gouge marks from punches knocking parts out of tubes, and some wads of shavings CA glued to the surface! Maybe some nice deep scratches from a minilathe bouncing across the table!

Seriously, Congrats on the awesome work surface/ storage! Hopefully it will last you for lots and lots of years!

That is great Andy---good looking bench and extremely functional, I see it is on wheels and appears to be the same height as your TS--can you use it as an outfeed?
I am jealous--

Yeah, Mike, it is the same height as the table saw and one of the table's main functions is as an outfeed table. Additionally, the wheels allow me to quickly move it and the saw forward so that I can put two cars in the garage during inclimate weather.

Wow, a really nice workbench and a really great neighbor. Makes you look a little differently at life, doesn't it?

It sure does make you look at life differently. When I lost my job, I almost went crazy. After 38 years of always having a job, the stress of unemployment was beginning to get to me. I keep busy by making pens and arranging to go to shows, repairing furniture, etc.

But I think that this neighbor realized that while I am doing all that I can do to keep the wolf away from the door, that I could use a little help that I would never ask for. Just his thoughtful gesture made life a lot easier.

One of the most important things in life is to be surrounded by caring people.

Nice table! I would love to come and visit your place!

Robert:
My door is always open to the IAP. I hope to make a Southeastern Chapter Meeting soon. I have heard lots of good things about you and Mrs. Rojo, and look forward to meeting you.
