Need new anti virus software. Currently have AVG but they want $40 to renew it now. Last year was $27. Cheaper is better but reliable is more important.

I have used the free AVG and have never had any trouble with it. You have to be careful when you sign up because they keep trying to get you to sign up for the pay version.

i have something called spybot that is free. I have several others running, but the spybot will alert you anytime something is trying to add itself to your computer.

If you're running Windows, you might consider MS Security Essentials.

It's free as well, and who would know more about protecting MS operating systems than MS? We use it on all our PC's at work, and we've never had a problem with it.

Spybot S&D is not anti-virus...very good malware product. Use it with Lavas Adaware, good combo. Better is Malwarebytes. 1 product to do the job

AVG was very good but has been behind the last couple years

For free, Avast is very hard to beat.

I am a computer consultant...have had my own business for 30 years. I use AVG Free Edition on most of my client machines. The businesses use the AVG Business edition.

I also recommend

Spybot Search and Destroy
Malwarebytes
CCleaner
Site Advisor

All are free...All are excellent utilities.

I had some serious problems with Avast with several clients earlier this year.

It missed a particularly malicious virus and I had to completely reformat and reinstall two systems because of it. AVG caught it.

Malwarebytes is the absolute best for removing fake antivirus infections. Because it is not a terminate and stay resident program, it cannot be disabled by a fake antivirus infection. I carry it on a thumb drive everywhere I go.

I use Kaspersky Internet Suite.
Just bought the new 2011 version for $30 and that is for a year.
Does not slow down the computer and i have been virus free for years now!
The new version has a tool that you can drag things into to be checked, so that is pretty handy!

Andrew

ps: on my mac i just turn the firewall on...
