This was out of my tree trimmer's woodpile, so it grows in Phoenix, AZ

It has a slightly spicy scent, but nothing strong.

Here is a pen made from this wood.

I'm going to post the pics on lumberjocks and see if anyone there recognizes it.

Why not just ask the tree trimmer what it is?

Nice pen.

He wasn't there when I picked up the wood and his wife didn't have a clue. It's quite a trek over there just to ask him what it is. Did I mention I picked it up from a pile that was 30' long, 15' wide and 5' high with the trimmings from about a hundred trees in it? We just had a big storm that broke a lot of tree limbs. (I also picked up a limb from an australian bottle tree, but it will have to wait because it is very green.)

Maybe it is liquid amber?
I think it is much too red for liquidamber. It looks like redwood in color, but is much harder, and redwood doesn't grow here to my knowledge. The bark isn't shaggy enough for juniper, and it doesn't have the right smell.

Sharon it looks like a Juniper which has that kind of bark. Is it a soft wood?

Not particularly soft. I'll bring some of it over. I have some sumac for you, too. It doesn't have as much scent as most juniper I've had, but it was an old dead branch.
