Ok.. so I went into my local best buy store yesterday and had to wipe the drool of the new toys. The new smaller Macbook Air has my geek needs running again.....

Its basically a mac notebook that is the size of an iPad when closed. I so want one, but need someone rich to adopt me because I can't justify it at all, its just the "cool" factor.

Whats funny is its same reaction my brain gets when I go into Woodcraft. And of course, the power tool budget's been blown already for the year, and the electronics budget comes nowhere near the price of the Air.

I know how that goes...

I saw a commercial for the Air the other day. Looks unbelievable thin, and cool.

Too bad all of my "fun money" budget is blown. Did manage to get a new 120gb PS3 with Black Ops though. Can't wait for that!

Lucky bugger, Black Ops doesn't hit our shops until the 9th of November

I think they look cool being so thin... BUT I'd be scared to actually take the thing anywhere. I just need more "heft" in a laptop. They just look flimsy to me. Kind of like the "Smart" brand cars. I could never drive anything like that on the road. Just doesn't seem to be very safe!

I had high hopes for the Air, but am definitely disappointed.

Limitations:

Only 1 USB port
No optical drive
No Firewire port
No ethernet port
No mobile broadband
No media card reader

For $1800 Apple needs to give me more than "eye candy".

How much is it? My wife was saying she wouldn't mind having an IPAD. I don't know how much those are either. I only know I have to do something about Christmas soon, and something like that sounds good to me.

Actually, I'd like this better than a iPad (with the exposed screen) - and I'm a huge fan of the Apple hardware - the aluminum body is great... on my MPB its solid as heck.. and Apple says the screen 1/2 of the air is from one pieces of aluminum.

I end up carrying my dell around work all day, and if I could carry one of these instead it would be SOO much better... Heck even my MBP beat carrying my dell, but thats my personal machine so the Dell gets carried the most.

Oh, I didn't mean I already have the game. I just got the ok from the wife to pre-order it. Still waiting for the 9th. If I did have it, I wouldn't be announcing it on the internet. LOL

Same problem here. You can use a usb hub, but that just adds to the clutter. Since I share my wireless internet conection with my credit card reader, a rj45 ethernet port is essential, as is mobile broadband.

As much as I like the Apple (I've also had tremendous success with all of their other products), these "non additions" are forcing me to buy the $258 Dell Slime Netbook.

But the Air sho is PURDY!!!!!

Wow.. I thought I was tough...
Lou, Andy, and Grub .. Here how I would see the Air.. This thing to me is a pretty powerful device thats much more portable than even most "netbooks"...

As for limitations listed by you guys:
- yes 2 usb ports (one each side)
- optical drive... I'm not sure why grub said lack of superdrive... There is an external USB superdrive available for this....
- ethernet.. I've never used it on my MBP, but if I did need one, USB
- media card reader (there on the 13" air, for the 11".. USB)
- mobile broadband.. USB

Firewire... Ok got me there.. but again - I do fine w/o even though my MBP has it.. Not sure I'd use the Air for video editing, but beyond that everything else is pretty cool...

Reviews say the 13" is about as powerful as my MBP.. wicked...

Is the thing perfect? Nope... But to have a REAL operating system and keyboard on a device the size of a iPad....

I SOO want one! and talking it through just made it worse, cause I wouldn't even need most of those USB things I listed... To me its a mini version of my MBP and I don't plug accessories into that all that often...

... Hmmmm can I make a $1400 pen???

Well...I did say it was amazing for it's size...Also, I would prefer to have my SuperDrive in my computer rather than carry it. I guess that I should say that I am typing this on my iPad in bed...love portability...I think they are going to sell tons of these but it really doesn't suit my needs as a Mac user.

I will stick with my MacBook

Ahh, but you have a MB and iPad... See I have a MBP and my iphone4... can't justify the ipad or the air.

How about 4 $350.00s

Nope.. Not yet... I top out right now at about $200 that I've been able to get a customer for... and I haven't sold 7 $200 to date.. so thats not gonna work either..

If it weren't for having a MBP and iphone already.. I'd probably pick one up.. But with those 2 things, I just can't justify the $$$ no matter how much I try.

I purchased both through my job....love the iPad. I guess one of my main points is that I would hate to buy it and then buy a SuperDrive as an accessory and then carry it with me.

I talked someone into buying one the other day. He was only using it for webpage design and would not need all of the same things that I need mine for.

Dean,
I think you should go ahead and get one. Speaking for myself I can not justify everything I have except for the reason "I wanted it". That reminds me, yesterday I bought a Pandigital ebook reader. Email, web, digital picture frame, Mp3 player, MP4 player, (convert dvd's to mp4). The ebook reader reads Barnes and Nobel format and pdf files. Works with the Android op system. 7 in. screen. Do I need one of these? You bet. Can I justify it? We'll see.

Dean, Just go for it.
