I was looking through some older posts about Cambridge pens and came across some posts by Cav. I was wondering is he another casulty of this site in that he has chosen to leave for one reason or another??? :confused:Man this place is changing.

I don't think Cav has gone anywhere. he is a dentist..he is very busy. he has never been a super chatterbox like some of us.

Some people were jealous of Steve and treated him with a lot of dis-respect. It wouldn't be right for me to get into it all, but he took a well deserved hyatis, and I can't blame him for it.

Jealous of what?!? His talent or his generosity? Steve's pens were works of art, something truly inspiring. Plus he was always willing to share his method of creating those pieces. It is such a shame. I know I will be looking forward for the Skiprat to return.

Thanks for the update. It just isn't right to hear that "we" are driving talents like Skippy away for whatever reason(s). Another sad story at the IAP saga.:frown:

John and Lupe,

You guys must be mind readers, because I was just wondering about those two guys myself.

Cav didn't always say a lot, but when he did, he usually floored me with a zinger. Besides, watching Cav and Ed go at it like a couple of pre-teen brothers was most entertaining.

I miss seeing Skippy's work. The things that man could do with stainless hardware... Wow.

Hope to see you guys back soon!:biggrin:

I don't think it was "we" as a group, rather a number of select individuals...

Too much talent being lost from this forum, I also wish they would come back and show their work again as many if not all of them inspired me a great deal, especially Steve (Skiprat).

I hope not, Jerry. I don't like seeing anyone leave because of bad vibes.

I find that I can learn from EVERYONE: beginner and veteran turner alike. I may not like some of the beads and coves that some turners like on their pens, but I can still appreciate a sweet bead when I see it! Even first-time penturners can teach me a thing or two. If nothing else, I learn what I like and dislike.

Sorry to say this guys, but I think things might get a little worse before it gets better.

Yes I hope it doesnt get worse this is bad enough. It is bad when we have such talented people on here and they are driven away for one reason or another. I can personally say that all the members here are the most giving group of any I have encountered. Where else will you ask a question and people just send a example of what they are doing so you will understand or give away blanks or anything for that matter. It is just a shame that some people are treated in a way that drives them off.

Holy cow, I was just wondering about Skippy yesterday as well....

I definitely agree that the vibe has been off- and I'm a realative newbie compared to some people on here. Definitely a lot of strong personalities- too bad that's gotten in the way of people showing others respect.

I hope theyre only taking a break. Way Too Much Talent to lose at the IAP! They have been a HUGE inspiration to me and I would hate to see the new members miss out on what they have to offer.

I too enjoyed reading Skiprat's posts and miss his presence here. Charlie too. Cav too. We almost lost Roy.

For those of us who choose to remain active and miss these folks, we can all sit around all day and say the site is changing, that there is disrespect, etc., but what can we DO about it? How can we make it better?

My Mom, God rest her soul, taught me to keep my mouth shut if I couldn't say something nice. Sadly, I do not always obey what she taught, but she was right. Possibly, just maybe, if we collectivly would think before we hit the "post quick reply" button, some feelings would not be hurt. I for one will make renued effort to follow that principle.

Yes, some of the work is not to my taste, such as I have, but I can learn that I do not care for that style of pen kit. On the other hand, some one must like it because they have gone to all the effort to make that pen or other thing. I'll try to look and keep my negative thoughts to myself. If I fail at this, someone please PM me and help me keep my over used mouth shut.

Thanks to all.
Charles

Sorry to say this guys, but I think things might get a little worse before it gets better.

Only if we let it...

I almost completely agree with this... There is absolute no reason it HAS to get worse... Personally I would have phrased this as:

Only if we MAKE it... and remember that we is YOU and I!

I know that I tried to self-moderate long before I was given the assignment of assistant moderator. I can't count the number of times that I started to post a reply and after getting it all typed up, looked at it and chose to NOT hit the submit reply. Sometimes what we don't say is almost as important as what we do.

This site has some of the BEST people out there that I have found on the web. Look at the great things that have been done recently (like the pens for cody). We can continue to be the best site on the web (and not just the best pen site either) if we choose to be.

Lets all make it better and draw those great people back!

Cav and I did have fun!! We still talk, albeit not often enough. "Life" has thrown him some curve balls---hopefully he will return someday.

Often it is not "WE" as a problem, it is just some. But..imagine if you were a very generous person, always giving tips, advice and even cash in support of a group. You compete in a contest, you use tools that are no more advanced than what many of us already have, yet you are constantly harassed that you should not be allowed to compete because you have tools others do not have and skills beyond the norm. Would you want to sit around and tolerate all that garbage all the time..and that is just one example of the whole picture. I am fortunate, I have not had these issues. I have all the same tools, and no doubt some that he does not, but he uses his tools more effectively than most..like using 80% of your brain instead of 10%. That and a few other things have driven him off...not necessarily permanently, but at least for a while to re focus on things. If I were he, I think I'd have to do the same thing. I love Steve. He has always been my biggest inspiration, taking me to new levels that I never knew I could get to and I really miss seeing him around. He is incredibly uplifting, never failing to make me smile. But...at least we are still able to talk through email, thank god for that.

I gotta be honest guys, I haven't been on or lurking here for several weeks. Granted it was mainly because I was on the road for almost 5 weeks straight, but I realize now, it was a breath of fresh air. Now I can come back refreshed and maybe put up with some stuff I might not have wanted to if I hadn't taken a break... just my .02... take it how you want.

Gee when I started this thread I did not mean it to be another one of those let us change our attitude deals but seem it has that overtone to it now.

If you look back and you really don't have to go that far back, just 2007 and read some older posts and look at some of the names that were partaking then and see all the talent that has left. Sure people leave for many reasons but being run off because of disagreements just seems wrong. We all lose in the end. Hopefully all those who have lost their way here find that path again. Lets make pens.

I don't know if that's the case John. I think the overall attitude of the IAP is just fine. There's going to be bad apples no matter what. Everyone will deal with these differently, and of course how much you have to deal with will vary from person to person. We never truly know all the facts either, so it's difficult to judge anyone about anything. I'm down with letting individuals sort out their own issues in their own time. In this forum we are going to have high times and lower times, it just a normal cycle of things. We'll get booming again soon. When the economy picks back up, I think you'll see a whole lot more happy people, and happy, just like a smile, is contagious! I'm down with making pens and of course making fun of the occasional person around here that I know.

It's all fine and dandy to refer to everyone as "we", but when it's all said and done the Admins and Mods are the ones that set the bar for the rest of the forum to follow. These are the leaders and people "we" are supposed to look up to for setting the path that "we" are supposed to follow.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but if things go on without moderation, then this only leads me to believe that it's an acceptable practice. Maybe this is why some folks have gone missing. Moderation is supposed to be for what's best for the forum, not what's best for someones needs or wants.

A good example could be, "Conflict of Interest" as this very biased and unethical in my opinion.

Our Admins and Mods are doing a very difficult and thankless job. They have the dubious, at best, job of deciding wheather to let us run or clamp down and ruin the exchange of ideas. I, for one, do not envy them their job. thank you both Admins and Modes for doing a job I would not have.

Almost every year the "good ole days" post seems to go around. I too miss Steven and William along with many others that were not mentioned. This hobby seems to run in cycles and we too have taken some some away. IAP is not any better or worse because of it, just different. Like a child it is ever evolving and it will continue to do so as new people join and older ones fade to the background.

How many of you can remember when Jeff would chat??? (beside Lou)

Dave,
A couple of points.

I would say that Jeff sets the bar, and we all should try and follow.. Yes the mods have a special purpose there, but I would honestly say that I as a mod would prefer to follow rather than lead. We're all adults here (more or less since you only have to be 13 to join).

Just because something didn't get moderated, doesn't mean its 'right'.. Remember that the mods are human! We can't see everything - Curtis has pointed out that little triangle REPORT button... If something is out of line use and and the mod team will discuss as needed.

As for your last point of "conflict of interest" - I'm not sure what you mean here... I don't know if your pointing to a topic, a problem or something else, but if you think there is something going on or wrong, please report it to us or PM us with details.

Dean
