JET LATHE 1014 HELP!!!

Hey guys,

I've been turning all of my pens thus far on a metal lathe. I just picked up an older JET 1014 (non-indexing) that was new old stock for $200.00.

I wanted to modify the lathe to add the indexing ring on the head spindle, and maybe add a variable speed controller.

Is this possible to do, and if so, where do I purchase the parts?

Also need to mount a metal lathe type chuck, but I already have one, and I'll be machining a custom back-plate for it tonight...

MIke is "sport on" with the Alisam indexing recommendation. It works!

Somebody makes a variable speed motor kit for the 1014, too. I know PSI sells one that they say will fit, but I have no experience with it.

I will be curious to hear what you decide on for a vs unit. I have considered the PSI one myself. The alternatives being ..
1) sell the Jet for what I can and buy a new unit with vs (probably the new Delta)
2) try to find the Jet replacement parts (hard to find and close to $180 if you can)
3) live with what I have :frown:
 
Yeah, I don't know what to do about that... The PSI unit doesn't look very good. There isn't a place to mount the controller, and this unit still requires changing the belt for better variation in speeds.

Nearly all of them do from what I have seen.
The exception (maybe) being the new one from PSI ... if I remember correctly from the Fine Woodworking review. It at least only has two belt settings. Most of them you can find a mid range belt setting that will alllow you to be within the "normal" (whatever that is) range for pen turning. You might have to change the belt to get down to the slowest speed for bowl work or some drilling.

I think Fine Woodworking MAY be the only ones to have actually seen/used the new PSI lathe. I haven't heard of anyone else who has one.:confused:
 
The other thing that bothers me are the reviews on the PSI VS kit. There are a couple complaints about how loud the motor is in comparison to the standard motor that comes with the lathe. Also, I guess you actually have to modify the motor housing on the lathe in order to accept the VS motor.

I already ordered the indexing solution referenced above. It looks like a great, inexpensive solution. Now, I just need to finish machining the back plate for my 3-jaw chuck.
 
I'm curious what you will use the indexing feature for? Do you have something in mind in the way of setting up a router or some other form of milling the blank that would necessitate the indexing feature?
 
Hehehe... I'm actually planning on mounting this small lathe to the X-Y table of my mill... The combination should open up ALL sorts of possibilities.

I've even thought about shaping my pens on the mill instead of just the lathe. It's one way of having "live" tooling when you're working on such a small item like a pen. If I run a 1" diameter 4-flute end mill I should be getting a killer head speed at 4500rpm. Then I'd be able to cut through pretty much anything. Wood to stainless no problem.
 
Alone the line of using an index and not to 'change' the topic in any way ... but have any of you folks mounted a Dremel, etc. to your lathe and made a larger version of the Pen Wizard? How about a regular size router?

Problems, pictures, plans, information, etc. thoughts on the subject! :biggrin:

The Jet 1014 fetches such a good resale price that you can likely sell a used non-VSI unit and buy a Jet VSI (if you look around at pricing) for about the same price or less than buying the P.O.S. variable motor change out.

Yeah, I think that is why you don't hear of anyone bothering with the conversion. I hadn't heard that the PSI one was noisy... that's one thing I have always liked about my Jet, it's VERY quiet! But then, my other lathe is an old Rockwell/Delta with a reeves drive. :smile:
 
Fred, it is easy enough to mount a router or rotary tool to a metal lathe tool post. Mounting one to a wood lathe requires a bit of ingenuity. You have to create a bed that has a track for the router to follow.

I know there are a few pre-made versions of this on the market. While you can probably design and create yoru own, you always have to ask yourself if it is worth the time and money to do so.

A decent router alone will run you at least $150.00 without even pricing out the other materials you would need to make it work.


OR, you could go a little outside the box, and mount your lathe to the X-Y table of a mill! ;)
