I got this in my email and found it interesting:

How much is a billion???

This is not meant to be political---both parties talk like a BILLION is chump change. Next time you see a politician, ask him-her what was happening a billion hours ago---I'll bet ALL of their answers would be fascinating---I know mine would have been REAL wrong!!

Reminds me of the story about the street vendor selling apples for a billion dollars each. A passerby stopped and said "boy, you're not going to sell many apples at that price!"

Ed, do you really think if they were mathematicians or that smart they would become politicians? The smart people are the wage earners no the other guys in gov. positions. plus, their attitude is that it's not their money they are spending and they wouldn't be around to pay it back either though.:eek::rolleyes:
 
Ed we use Hillbilly Math here, but by my calculation 1 billion seconds would take us back 2000 years. This is not taking leap years into account though. There is 1440 seconds in a day. 365 days in a year, that's 525,600 minutes. 2000 years would be 1,051,200,000 minutes. Just testing that Wisconsin math:biggrin:.

Now, ya see Ernie, them is SHORT days!!!

Here in Wisconsin, the sun must stay up longer, cause we have 1440 MINUTES :eek::eek:in a day. So, our statement that a billion minutes would get us to the time of Christ is pretty close to accurate--eh??

But, in fairness to the email sender, I don't know what part of the calculation was done here and how much came from KEN Tuck!!! (My ex was from KEN-Tuck, too)
 
Well Ed, Here in Ken Tuck we cants read either!! Sounds like we got a name for a new blank, Exotic Blanks Billion second pen. Could probably even put watch parts on it!!!:wink:

Close as I can figure, bring 5400 of your closest friends with their semis, as well--you will need them to load a billion pennies.

Oh, and your "bumper to bumper convoy" will stretch from here to Chicago---just over 60 miles.

I have to hand it to you while you watch for variations in time observing gear changes in your car we probably have to face up to the variations between the US Billion and the Aussie Billion differences. We can band together to adjust the time differences as we go ticking the pros and cons of the systems dating correspondence noting with alarm Mickeys hand passing twelve. The links will hold the unit in place automatically winding up this small observation time marches on.

Total regards to you both from this part of the world where currently justice is being done with near parity of the Aussie dollar with the greenback. When I was young the Aussie dollar was worth two greenbacks but that was a million light years ago or seems like it.

8 766 hours x 60 minutes per hour = 525 960 minutes per year

Taking that 525960 minutes per year: 1 000 000 000 minutes/525 960 minutes per year, we get 1901.28 years

2010-1901 = summer of 109 AD (one quarter of a year, roughly -.28)

So that brings us to the reign of Trajan (Five Good Emperors Era), rather than the reign of Tiberius (Julio-Claudian era)
 
Is a billion the same as a billion 2000 years ago?? Bill Gates would of owned the world back then if it was

What year did the people THINK it was in 109AD? Prior to the Gregorian calendar??

The Gregorian calendar did not come into effect until the 1500s, and only changed the dates slightly. The Julian calendar was in effect for a long time before that...

Pre-Julian calendar, however: The Romans did not use a 'date' system per say. Rather, they recorded dates by events and leaders. That is, 'the second year of Marcus Crispus' consulate' etc.

They developed the concept of Months as we know them (we even use the same names for many), and divided the months into sections (kalends, ides, and...well, I can't for the life of me remember the name of the third part of a month, but it'll come to me!)

But long story short, the later Republicans dated their years by the Consuls, and also (for formal matters or senatorial address) by the date since the founding of Rome...the Empire didn't change much - that is, 109 AD would be 862nd year since the founding of Rome, in the eleventh year of the reign of Emperor Trajan)

The formal Julian Calendar as we know it was popularized through the power of the Church.
 
A billion dollars? That's about $3 for every man woman and child living in the US or about $.15 for every person on the face of the earth.

Approximate....

To get the number of seconds/minutes/hours in a year...you have to consider a year (calendar year) to be 365.2425 days long over a 400 year average. In 400 years we add 97 days for leap years. Years ending in 00 not divisable by 400 are not leap years. So that will toss most of the calculations into the give-or-take a tad catagory..

The most noticable difference between the British and US systems is that here a billion is one thousand million and there a billion is one million million.
 
The hard part was getting all the mud from between my toes and off the nails. By the way it is spelled "edgeumakation". OUr Govner can't spel it neither!

Hey! I have relatives out there with 10 fingers and 10 toes who can only count to 15 because they use 1 hand to point at the fingers and toes as they count.

I must apologize, my kin are from around Lexington and Brandonburg neither is really Western KY....but their name is McCoy which should make up for that.
 
Smitty,they must've rubbed off. Brandenberg doesn't have an O in it:biggrin:. It's also fairly close to the Big City.
