I am not going to get anywhere near a bear in the wild. My neighbor was mauled by a bear out west several years ago and is still learning to walk again. No bears for me ... bells or no bells. 
BTW, pepper spray requires a narrow distance between the bear's 'dinner', whereas a can of wasp spray is useful for better than 20 feet and is much more accurate.
I DO NOT recommend that anyone ever spray themselves with wasp spray as it is instantly blinding and the effect lasts for quite a bit of time. It is also cheaper than a good grade of pepper spray and there are more sprays in a can.
Either way I do not plan on any bear encounters of the wild bear kind to find out.

Yup, thought about it; researched it. 3/8" Yellow braided Polypropelene rope (what it looks like to me) has a work load rating of only 243 pounds but a breaking point of 2700 pounds. 1/4" has a breaking point of 1250 pounds. Feasible pictures.

Now I have to go find the key cleaner and canned air, Also need to get monitor cleaner. Funny. I saw a program the other night where they were caring Pepper spray and a large Caliber rifle.

Actually, if you look closely at the last two pictures you'll see that it is not a spike but a skinny tree trunk that is partially obscured be leaves below the bear, thus giving it the appearance if a spike.

The bear isn't my problem... some critter is stealing my peppers and hiding them in my wood rack... maybe getting ready for a fiesta??:biggrin:
This is a covered wood rack I built last spring for storing some of my bowl blanks..it's on the back side of the shop..

I think they're trying to give you a hint that they want you to make one of those blanks into a bowl for their salsa.
