I am leaving in a couple of weeks for a trip. My husband is going to Europe for business and I am going to meet him there.
My family is originally from Belgium so we will be there for 3 days in search of ancestry information. I have been in contact with a possible relative and she has invited us to her home. this is not for overnight but so we can decide what towns to go to for research.
Anyway, it is custom to bring a gift and of course I was thinking of a pen. I think I would like to make it out of lilac wood. The issue is I want it to be very special. So what pen and what should I make to go with the pen? Should I make her husband one also? Should I make a fountain pen or a roller ball? Or should I make something like a jewelry box?

Anyone got any suggestions?

Funny you should mention this! My wife's parents are from (and live) in Austria. We are visiting in January and I will also be bringing a pen as a gift to my Father-in-law.

I would suggest a fountain pen, as they are just plain classy! Here's the Majestic that I am bringing.

Alice, in Europe fountain pens are in wide use, If it was me I would bring a set of Jr. Gents or Jr.Statesmen fountians in 22k/Rhoudium along with an extra rollerball nib and refill and show them how to change from one to the other....you will be a hit..

John, WOW!
It is very beautiful, but it does look like a mans pen. What really good pen set is geared for a woman?

I'll have to check the catalogue for the fountain jr. Gents. I have some lilac that would work well for worthless wood. I could do hers with a purple resin and maybe the one for him a blue? Or maybe just the wood. I wanted to use a wood from the US. This lilac is actually from my neighborhood.

You could make one with wood from their country and wood where you live. Put in some blue acrylic to symbolize that only an ocean seperates you or something sappy like that. (That was the wifes idea not mine, I've got nothing).

I agree with Roy about fountain pens and rollerball inserts. I would do Jr. Gents or a Zen. I would do a burl like Cherry or Amboyna, because I think they are elegant woods.

Alice:
My sister worked for Coke and spent a lot of time in Belgium. She mentioned that she found it funny that many of the Europeans carried beautiful fountain pens. So, I think a fountain would be well recieved.

Also, knowing how talented you are, you could pull this off.....If you could find information on "the family crest" perhaps a crest "decal" or a laser cut on a wood that has significance to the relative's town (I know in Wales the houses have names rather than addresses, so the homes have historical significance) or their home should be well recieved.

Just a thought?

I was checking into the Majestic and the JR Majestic and penn state charges and extra $20.00 per pen for the fountain pen part! Are they solid gold? Why so much?
