I'm in the market for both a dead center and a live center (MT2). Based on a number of mentions here, I was planning to buy them from penturnersproducts.com... but they are out of stock on both!

1) Where else can I get a reasonably-priced, quality dead center?

2) Lathe Master has a great price for a live center - what's the difference between this and the live centers I can get for three times the price at CSUSA etc.? http://www.lathemaster.com/CARBIDE TIPPEDLIVECENTER.htm

Thanks!

I would send him a pm first, he may not have his website accurate.
His name is johnnycnc here on IAP.

If that doesn't work then I think Victor sells them as well.
His name is LandfillLumber here on IAP.

The Little Machine Shop also has good prices and service of lathe gear. They have a live center for $23, and a dead center for $7. I've bought both from them in the past, and they're nice.

Was going to post this in other thread.

They carry both 60 degree live and dead centers. Just type in what you're looking for details and prices.

I also use kit bushings to turn between centers.

Let's keep the money here in the IAP family with the people who help support this site .

Victor at landfill lumber has dead and live centers and lots of great wood , here's his website http://landfilllumber.com/
and an ad in the classifieds for dead centers is here , http://www.penturners.org/forum/showthread.php?t=67634

Johnnycnc at www.penturnersproducts.com also sells dead and live centers as well as the best bushings for turning between centers and lots of other things for making pens .

Best of all , as I said these guys help support the IAP family .

Butch,

Read both threads, you will see I am not knocking either Johnny, or products sold at Penturners Products. I admit did not know of Victor or products sold at Landfilllumber or his e-bay store. Thanks for the information.

1. Original post asked if could use kit bushings to TBC!

Lots of advice and recommendations for using kit bushings and buying bushings from Penturners Products presented.

2. Second thread told us Penturners Products dead & live centers currently out of stock, and asked for alternative source! Butch, what part of dead & live centers out stock do you not understand?

I did not know about little machine shop until finding penturners.org. Not the first time Little Machine Shop been recommended here. Not the first time both Grizzly centers recommended here on this web site too!

Wildman , no need to get your knickers in a knot .
First of all , I was speaking to the OP of the thread and in general , and not singling you out or saying that you were knocking anyone . I ask people to support our vendors whenever I can because without their support this site wouldn't be the place that it is !!!
Second , I'm not even sure which other thread you are talking about (did I comment in it?) and did not know that Johnny was out of stock , But I still stand by my comments since Victor has both live and dead centers IN STOCK ! and we SHOULD support our vendors whenever we can .
Last , I've never said that anyone shouldn't buy from anywhere else , just that we should keep the money in the family when we can .

Matthew,
Sent you a pm last night. to follow up, the dead centers are back in stock, good supply.
live centers..a few in stock, going fast.
I'm having a heck of a time with live centers, I'm having to inspect every one
for potential bearing problems, and returning more than I keep out of every order.
And that's from FOUR different distributors. The quality control on these things
has been flushed!!
You will get a good live center if you order from me, as I said I'm taking time to inspect
each one by running it with a blank and bushings, under power on the lathe.
It's a hassle but I can't afford returns from customers, either!

Thanks,
John

Thanks, John, placing my order now!

I'm not even sure which other thread you are talking about (did I comment in it?) and did not know that Johnny was out of stock
That John was out of stock was in the first post of this thread, not the other one.

Anyway, I totally agree about preferring to buy from IAP vendors. If John hadn't just gotten some in, I would have gone to Victor to get them.

Thanks everyone for your feedback, it seems like now that John's got them back in stock, my issue's resolved. :)

WOW! After reading this thread at a little before 6am (PT) I went to John's site and ordered the centers. By 6:30am (my time) I had had 4 emails from is site! "Order confirmed", "Order updated to Processing", "Order updated to Shipping" AND a "refund notice"!!

NOW THAT IS SERVICE!!!!

Thank you John, were you sitting there waiting just for me??

Thanks Paul! I did not know that was you, but I do now!
I am doing my chores this morning at home, spent the wee hours at the shop making parts, so I happened to be hangin' around.

I'm going to be sending you another message..check your email again in a bit..

Me, too! Isn't it funny how good that kind of responsiveness feels? In the grand scheme of things, one e-mail and one-business-day responsiveness are perfectly reasonable and businesslike, but immediate and personal responses make a customer feel extra-valued. It's like he's excited about your order!

Thanks John, I know I'm not the first IAP member to tell you this, but your service has won you another permanent customer!

Thanks for the kind words, Matthew!
I consider most everyone here as part of an "extended family", so that's how
I try to treat you.
I have no unsatisfied customers that I'm aware of..in the unlikely event
that there is an issue, it's taken care of!

John
