On a recent thread, I said i wasn't going to post anymore. Well I lied, was mistaken, talked into returning... whatever. As long as my friends here outweigh the enemies, I will stay!

After spending a couple of days not posting, and doing alot of thinking while staying busy in the shop, I realized what it is really all about.

It isn't about who makes the best, or coolest pen. It isn't about who has the cheapest blanks, or where to get the newest tools. It isn't about who breaks the rules.

What it is about is help. I help this guy, This guy helps me, We help this chick, She helps some dude, and on and on and on. One of our members tries his hardest to remind all of us every time he posts. He literally types in his tagline every single time he posts. It isn't in his signature, where it is automatic for all of us to read.... NO, That would negate the entire point. It is in the body of his message, which means he types it out every single time. To remind himself, and us, of what it is all about. And it is simple.

His tagline has inspired me to start a new game. "RAK-ing". RAK is an acronym for Random Act of Kindness.

I challenge EVERYONE that reads this to go out of your way to RAK someone.

How it works:

To RAK someone, you must simply perform a random act of kindness for a stranger. It could be someone on the site, or someone in your day to day life.

What you win:

KARMA POINTS! ( and a warm fuzzy feeling inside).

Good examples:

Pay an extra toll at the toll road (one of my favorites)

Pull over and help someone change a flat tire

Take ice cold waters to someone working or living in the heat

Take your neighbor to lunch

give someone a small flat rate box of your giant stash of pen blanks

donate your extra or old tools to a new turner, or local turning club, high school shop class

teach a kid how to make a pen

There are lots of ways to RAK people. I like to try to come up with off the wall ways to do it. Give an exuberant tip to a carhop or push a bunch of karts in at wal mart. Sometimes, i even get stopped in the process and some people look at me like i am crazy, but it is hot outside, and some dude has to push all these stinking karts in, and I am going that way anyway...

Just something to think about next time you stop at the convenience store and there is a guy across the street running a jackhammer in the 105 degree heat. I bet it would make his day if you got him a fountain cup of ice and a bottle of water!

Thank you for your post. Seeing I have been on the receiving end of RAK. As some here know. I want to thank them again for their help and gifts. I also believe in the pay it forward thing. When I do something for someone and they want to do something for me I always tell them to pay it forward. I figured I get blessed sometimes and I want someone else to be blessed as well. I figure if all the world would do this, what a wonderful place this would be . again thank you for posting this. And thanks everyone for your help.

I did it just today. My doctor's appointment got screwed up and 1 on the drivers for "CARTS", it's a system mainly for the handicapped broke is route and came and got me home so I didn't have to wait 3 hours for my scheduled ride. I gave him my cigar pen that I carry to say thanks. I'm also starting to carry, my wife actually, a couple pens and if I see a man in uniform I'm giving them to him/her. Everybody should be doing this.

If you ever come up to Killeen, be sure to bring about 30,000 pens with you There's a LOT of military there.

I think I would prefer to hose down the girl that jogs by my house every day so she can cool off a bit, she looks hot and sweaty!!!

One of the guys here RAK'd me last year. I then PIF'd, RAKing someone else. And so on and so on.

Nice to see a thread started about it, but I'm not comfortable bragging it up.

I'm not trying to brag. In fact, I do alot of RAK's that don't get mentioned to anyone, even my wife. If you perform an act of kindness for publicity, then it wasn't an act of kindness.

I just wanted to inspire people to RAK one another without being called to do it. I think it is pretty customary to RAK the PITH, But i want people to RAK people in every day life. I don't want anyone to post of their Rak-ing exploits, especially for bragging rights. For inspirational reasons, it would be cool for people to post RAK ideas, but you dont have to mention that you actually performed said RAK idea.

So did you receive my RAK yet :biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

Nope, not yet...

BUT since you brought it up, your RAK, and a couple others are what inspired me to post this thread.

I was asked for a copy of the guitar tutorial that me and my son in law wrote up. No biggie at all, especially considering i could not find the original and had to come here and ask for a copy. I sent the guitar tutorial to the person that requested it, and then i got RAK'd. This person lives in a place that is a very very long way away from where i live, and it is a special place to my wife because of her family heritage. The RAK-er is RAK-ing my wife with sacred pebbles from her motherland. A place that she will likely never have the opportunity to visit. It means so much to her that i cannot explain it with these words. The simple gesture of collecting a few pebbles and shipping them half way around the world has touched her tremendously. This RAK also holds some super sweet goodies for me too! Some super cool exotics that i have never seen, let alone turned... And some of it is pretty darned rare! There is also a tool accessory that i am excited to get. When i tried to work out a deal to give something in return for the RAK, I was shot down. At first i thought he was gonna accept some stuff for the RAK, but NOOOO...... He has to be difficult:wink:

I asked for a trade for a pen case... I got two offers with three cases. One of which just asked me to give the case a good home, and the other is a friend who just wants a handfull of my handy dandy homebrew blanks!

I was also RAK'd by another member after I posted pics of the Granite pen i made. This member is RAK-ing me with a pen blank of Italian Alabaster!!! Again, this member asked for nothing in return, Just the satisfaction of knowing i will be challenged to my limits with the blank!

And again I was RAK-d with residual RAK-ings by a member when i traded a box of homebrew blanks for a box of wood. The wood i recieved was WAY better than the acrylics i sent... And to top that off, the RAK-er is RAK-ing me again, this time with a box full of burl cutoffs for casting fun!

There are other RAK's that i have been a part of that i won't bring up now... It is someone elses turn to talk about getting RAK-d!

Ron, I wanted to let you know that both my wife and I are turning our PITH pens from your awesome PR blanks. They both turned out great and once our partners have seen them, you will see just how great they turned out!

Well Ain't I speshul!!!:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

That is pretty sweet! I am glad my blanks were able to have a showing in the PITH!

The pen i did for my partner had a blank that i didnt make so i gotta make up for that by sending homebrew packing materials!
