I've got to get a new cell phone and since my wife and son have AT&T that's who I'll have to go with. I'm sick of my nextel and just thankful my contract is finally up. I'm very rough on phones and have always got the rugged motorola flips with the military specs. The only one like that AT&T offers is the Tundra. Anyone have experience with this phone? Good? Bad?

I have no exp. with the Tundra. I don't care for AT&T, but I cared even less for Nextel, once Sprint took over. I'm still with AT&T, but their coverage is very dependant on the phone. My wife and I have Nokia phones. My daughters is a Motorola. My daughters reception is much, much better than mine or my wifes.
It's all in the phone. When mine can't find a network. My daughters works fine. I'll stay with AT&T, but I'll be looking for a Motorola phone to replace the Nokia's. Most likely the Tundra (Motorola) will be the replacement.:smile::smile:

Hmmmmm, I guess it is finally time to pipe in.

I work for AT&T, albeit I work in the HSDL provisioning group as a service admin. I worked in their wireless department for 4 years before upgrading my career.

I, personally, have no experience with the Tundra, as I use a Tilt 2, (I need a full qwerty keyboard), however, 2 of our other admins have them. They both seem to love it. They claim that they get great reception, and the phone does what they need it to do without any hiccups.

Quick question, if you are so hard on phones, why a flip? They are notorious for being the easiest to damage! Rugged, or not! Get a touchscreen in a hard case! No hinges to break!

Anyhoo.... As always, YMMV.

I have never had an issue with my Tilts, (On my second one after 3 years with the first), but, one of my co-workers has had constant issues with his. Honestly, I think it is him, not the phone, because I've seen the way he treats it, but......

If you don't want the sliding keyboard, get a Pure. Operates on the WM6.5 Pro OS, is upgradeable, has thousands of things you can make it do, and best of all, it is a Tilt 2 without the sliding keyboard.

DO NOT buy a Nokia. (Sorry, Mark!) Years ago they were on top, Now, they have major reception issues, the batteries seem to still be in the middle ages, and they are not nearly as user friendly as most of their competitors. They also seem to require proprietary software, should you want to add stuff in the future.

All in all, Motorola makes the best flips, and HTC makes the best touchscreen/PDA.

FWIW, I like the heft, and large screens of the touchscreens best. Flips just feel to dainty to me.

phones

I agree with cdirto.

Used to have had a Tilt for work and it is bullet proof. I dropped in the yard one night and it survived 8" of snow (first time I ever shoveled the front yard).

My personal phone is an old HTC bar phone that is 4 or 5 years old and has been dropped numerous times on concrete floors. A little dinged up, but it works perfectly.

Hmm, sounds like an opportunity, Mick - adapt one of those circuit board pens to become your cell phone pen! I know you treat your pens pretty good!

Thx Todd. Reception is my big issue. The batteries seem fine. But the reception is terrible.

I'll second the iphone suggestions. There is a case(called a rhino?) that makes it pretty hard to screw up(unless you drop it in the crapper DAMHIKT:eek:).

I didn't want an iphone but was forced to get one for work... Now, I can't imagine not having an iphone.

Pick up a unlocked HTC HD2 phone and use with att.

larger screen the the iphone, hd resolution, wm 6.5 (I know no android) but windows mobile 6.5 on this and HTC sense is the bomb.

Great battery life, great reception, easy to use.

I know it's not ATT.but I really love my Jitterbug phone.Super simple and easy to use,and the speaker feature works great.

With my close-up eyesite going,I wanted it for the large buttons that light up at night easily.I think it's pretty tough compared to the other phone I had.

No contracts, and it's about 10.00 a month less than when I had ATT.

It's neat how you can manage your account on-line,and you can call a Jitterbug operator,or a 24 hr.nurse any time, although I haven't tried that feature yet

iPhone for me. There is a subscription app that allows you to accept credit cards which I will be using this summer for art shows. Got the iPad last week to use for my other hobby.....photography (awesome when used to show portfolio)

Funny you should mention that...We have a guy who had his Cell Phone (Motorola Razor right after they first came out) in his shirt pocket and was using the men's room. His phone fell out of his shirt pocket as he was leaning over to flush. The phone went into the drain pipe and got stuck. All that was heard were furious four letter words as his phone went down.

For the next week people would snicker and say funny things like - perhaps we should call it and see where it pop's up - or does it have GPS on it, perhaps we can catch it at the other end - or it gives new meaning to "reach out and touch someone".

Never the less, the building maintenance crew came out and removed the phone from the drain line. The phone no longer worked, and the guy had to get a new one. But he has now entered the building's lexicon and he will forever be known as Cell Phone Guy!

I've dropped several in the crapper before I got the iphone. I wear my phone on my belt or on the waistband of my scrubs, and the iphone clip case I've got is rock solid. The palm treo(s) I had before were not as secure(and the phones sucked).

The phones made an interesting 'death rattle' when they hit the water that the porcelain only magnifies.

You are right about the "phones made an interesting 'death rattle' when they hit the water that the porcelain only magnifies." I dropped mine and watched it die an agonizing death.

I wish ATT would work around my area...unfortunately being in the sticks of Maine, US Cellular is the best company for reception. Customer Service sucks though

Coverage is my issue too. I'm with AT&T forever and a day. I think I'll try a Motorola on my next go-around.

if you're going with att, get an iphone. i don't know how i got along without it.

Ditto:
I use the Iphone more as a computer than I use my computer as a computer. My Iphone 3 has been bullet proof. Great reception, great "portable office", great credit card terminal.

All the carriers and all the phones will get bad reviews from many people. None of them are perfect. It all comes down to pricing and features. Pick a carrier you hate the least if that's most important to you or do what I did, pick a phone you love the most and take the carrier that makes it work that you have no choice but to choose.

If you buy a iphone 3G though, do not upgrade it to the 4.0 software. Holy crap it's slow and buggy and my iphone locks up a couple of times a day now.

I have had my Tundra for almost two months, I haven't had any problems with it yet. I did notice that the Tundra does have better reception than the phone it replaced.

Parson, I would not say the software is buggy, it just may not work well with the older 3g since it is no longer made and the new software was not really written for it. I have the new iPhone 4 and it works flawlessly with the new software. I have a friend that has a 3Gs and it works flawlessly with his phone too.

BTW, the iPhone 4 is real nice and super fast compared to my 3G. I did not really want to spend the money but the battery on my 3G was wore out and would not last past about 4:30. I figured rather than buy a new battery for an old phone, I would just get a new phone with a better battery to begin with. The battery alone was worth the upgrade. When I go to bed I still have 1/2 of my battery left! I use about 3,000 minutes per month of voice so I need a battery that will last. It also has better reception than my 3G and of course a much better screen and camera.

The 4.0 software that one downloads for a 3G, 3GS, and a 4 is not the same. iTunes knows which phone you're attempting to upgrade and sends that special version of 4.0. For example, you cannot multitask on a 3G but you can on a 3GS with 4.0 installed. Apple's modified it a bit to work on each phone... and they really need to modify the 3G version again!

The 3G version of 4.0 is slooooow.

Curtis...Would you make the same 4G decision after using it a month?

I am due for a phone upgrade (IPhone 3 -two years old), My 3g has performed flawlessly, but I wanted to see what users say about the new 4G. I am encouraged. Most of those I talk to say that it really is better than the 3G (s).

If you're thinking iphone - I'd recommend the new 4 in a heartbeat!!! The screen resolution alone is worth it. Much more readable! I love my new one (and my wife loves my old 3gs :) )

Problem is there are no iPhone 4s around. At least not anywhere near here. This morning I was told by our local Apple store to place my order and I might see one in three or four weeks. I'll hang on to my 3g for a bit longer. Apple will probably have a new and improved iPhone 4 in 6 months anyway.

Another vote for the iphone. I've had mine about a year and it is probably the best thing i have. You can probably get a good deal on the 3G now that the 4 has come out.

Andy,

Yes, I would recommend the iPhone 4 without reservation. The screen is so much better there is no comparison. The camera is much better and the battery life will last for anything you need. I find in my area that the reception is also better than with my 3g. It is also much faster with almost instant loading of any app and the data access through the network seems faster as well. I got mine it he mail on the launch day so have had it a long as anyone.

That's all I need to know. I trust you judgement.. So off to upgrade. The 3g has been AWESOME! I just needed confirmation.

Apple never should have released software update 4.0 for the 3G iPhone. They don't allow it on the original iPhone... if they don't release some sort of update that is 3G specific to fix the numerous reboots I must do, I'm going to revert back to 3.x. This is ridiculous and so unlike Apple to leave a situation like this for more than a week.

Just today I launched the iPod app and it crashed. Three times.

This, my friends is BUGGY.

Hey Parson, I looked at your web site. You have some very nice looking pens. If you don't mind me asking, what kit (if it is a kit) was the first pen made from. The black and white one with casien on the top barrel. It looks really sharp.

I have a 3g iphone(waiting for my new iPhone to come in the mail) when I first Installed the 4.0 software...it was very buggy and didnt work....you have to restore the iphone and then install the 4.0 software....mine works perfectly now!
