Here in San Diego,it was really rockin 'n rollin for what felt like forever, but was really only about 45 seconds they said.We are on the 2nd floor in a 3 floor apartment complex, and it really was swaying bad.

At first the dishes started to rattle, then you heard this loud rumble in the background, all the while my wife starts to screen when the big screen TV started swaying on its base like a tree, and the whole wall seemed to be moving. It let up after the first 5 seconds, then grew more and more stronger. That was the scary part...it just kept getting stronger as it went along.

There were 4 strong aftershocks that followed that rattled our nerves.

Anyway, that was the biggest one ( 7.2 ) that we have experienced.Sure glad that there hasn't been any major damage.

Steve

Wow. I cannot even imagine the feeling of helplessness. You are all in out thoughts and prayers.

Just another day in S Calif.

I spent a year in tornado country and I'll take the quakes. With quakes you're going about your business till it hits, then you stop for about a minute to wait till it's over. Afterwards if the power's still on and the building's still standing you pick up where you left off like nothings happened. With Tornadoes they sound a warning and you go sit in a basement for two hours wondering if it's going to hit.

At least you can take refuge from a tornado. Where can you go to escape an earthquake?

What's to escape? Last I've seen, a lot more people are killed by tornadoes in the US than earthquakes.

Yes, I know worldwide millions of people die in quakes, but that is generally due to lax building codes. And, yes I know that some day a really big one is going to hit here and we'll too have deaths. I'm not making fun of that. But the fact of the matter is no matter where you live there is a chance of some kind of natural disaster, so you pick your disaster and learn to live with it. For me, it's earthquakes, so I prepare for the worst and ignore the rest.
Heck, I've been reading reports the geologists expect that sometime in the next 50,000 years Yellowstone is going to pop it's cork, and when it does most of the US will be gone anyway. So why worry about which is worse, earthquakes or tornadoes, when we have that looming over all of us.

The largest majority of earthquakes are so small that you never feel them, at about magnitude 3.5-4 you might feel a very very small amount of sway. If you felt it at all you would probably think that you just stepped wrong. I have gone through one big earthquake and it is a litlle scary at first but all you do is get in a door way, under a table etc. I will gladly take an earthquake over a tornado. There is not a earthquake season like there is for hurricanes and tornadoes. It can be years before one is even felt.

I know we live on a fault line here in Connecticut, but I still can't imagine what it would be like to have the ground actually move under you. It has to be unbelievable. I've been through many a tornado, many severe blizzards, etc., but never an earthquake.

My thoughts are with you.

Oh, gee, thanks Dale! We have a cabin about 30 miles from Yellowstone - I wouldn't even get a running start!

Scott.
