Do you apply any finish to a bowl or utinsel that will be used in the kitchen, such as a dough bowl, rolling pin, wooden spoons? I was thinking vegetable oil or something non petroleum.
Another option is Sunflower oil. Will not go rancid, easy to find in the grocery store, and low cost. I prefer Sunflower oil for wood items that contact food.
Just burnish the rolling pin, no finish necessary.
With the others, the best bet is mineral oil as it does not go rancid, and the risk of allergy affects is very very slim.
If you know that there are no issues in the house, then walnut oil is a good choice, but the oil still can leech into other foods and affect taste, where mineral oil has no taste to inpart into something else.
