I have some of this redwood burl, but have not turned it before. I want to know if this wood is suited to turning without being stabilized. It seems soft and light like buckeye, which turns and works better for me if stabilized.

I sell tons of unstabilized Redwood burl blanks. I'm new to turning but have not had any problems.

If you try to remove too much wood or use dull tools you can get a little bit chip out.

What I've done is turn the blank down near the final size and sand the rest. Redwood sands very fast so it's done in a flash.

Like Scott said, if you ever run into problems with very soft, spalted or even punky woods, thin CA can work wonders. Someone here posted a video(help me out if you know the link) on using CA and then sanding to make a CA/sawdust slurry. I tried this out with a half splated/half rotten blank and it came out perfect. You would never know the wood was near useless.
