Got a couple of surprises in the mail .. and HAD to get into the shop!

There was a white blank with some hints of blue.. couldn't tell what it
was till it was turned. You can't tell from the photo, but the blue has some
pearl in it so it flares when lit from a certain angle. It cut great and polished
up like a dream.

I think I'll give it to my friend who is a 'Culligan Man"

The other blank .. well you can see what it looks like. I can't turn it, but
I might just build a shadowbox and display the blank. I don't want to ruin it!

THANKS JEFF!!!

Man, that other blank almost looks like a satellite photo of one of the continents... Too bad they don't make pen hardware for 3/4 square pens...

Nicely done. I'm anxious to see what the other looks like round. If Jeff's a Master Scroller for the work he does, and you are baiting me in to buying one of his blanks in a masterful way, does that make you...

That looks great Charlie. Appreciate all the praise too. It does look much better with the blue and white instead of a swirling grey/black white. The blue band however is supposed to be at the bottom of the pen so when the cap is on the rain all flows down the pen into the pool of water ...but...I can see how you might prefer it that way so when uncapped to write with it all flows together...hmmmm, perhaps both ways are equally correct. It's a cool concept..I am still working on it with some little changes in color and style.

Hey .. Jeff did all the work. I just made it round and shiny.

I was trying to decide which end to put the water on and I thought about the
blue at the end, but decided to give them the water at the bottom while writing
rather than while storing the pen. I figured that since the cap was postable, it
made a nice little rain shower when the pen was being used.
Didn't stop to think that it looked a little awkward when it is being stored, but then
pens should be USED!

What type of resin was this? (if you don't mind my asking?) It felt a bit like a
combination of resin and powdered stone. I've experimented with powdered marble
and porcelain in resin and this felt very similar. Turned great.

It is Alumilite CC. If you are afraid of spinning or just like the other blank as it is, you could sand it smooth to get rid of any saw marks and then stand it on and and give it a quick light coat of polyurethane to help hide any scratches and brighten up the blank for a wetter look which will also reveal the depth and shimmer in it.

If you are afraid of spinning or just like the other blank as it is, (snip)

That's just it.. I love the blank as it is.. the detail looks great.

You know how once in a while you get a blank that looks *so* good that
anything you would do to it (including cutting or turning) might just make
it less amazing? I already know what it looks like on the outside, and maybe
it will look even better on the inside. But maybe not!

I have this trouble with some burl blanks, too. I might turn away some
of the good stuff. Sounds silly, I know.. it's a pen blank. But the detail is
tight.. the color and contrast catch the eye.. I think for now I'll just polish
it.

Very nice work guys!!! You know those blanks had to be something REALLY special to get Charlie away from the laser!

Love the new rain blanks Jeff. You did a great job with it Charlie! The pen looks fantastic!!

I agree with Charlie. That Star blank is killer. The colors and the way the resin swirls - kinda reminds me of the "Pillars of Creation" in the Eagle Nebula.
