I've picked up some bowl blanks that are 3x6x6 and some 4x4x8. These are exactly 6" and 8" long. I'd love to turn some 6" and 8" peppermills.

My question is: Can I get a 6" peppermill out of a 3x3x6" blank?

Can I get a 8" peppermill out of a 3x3x8" blank?

Yes and no. Personally, I would have to say no. There is going to waste on the ends, if for no other reason, sanding. But I would also shaping on the top end. Just my 2 1/2 cents.

Plan on loss of an inch in length. Might be able to get a bit less loss with careful work and measurements.

I'll agree with Curt & Ken, I only make the crush grind style of mills and while I would get nearly a 6" and 8" mill out of the blanks, my method of setting the head onto the body would drop the heights to about 5 5/8" and 7 5/8 maximum respectively.

Primary advantage of the crush/grind is you can adjust the length of the shaft to fit what ever size you wind up with.
