Pepper mill

Made this 10" mill for my daughters' in-laws, who provived the wood from a downed tree in their yard. Not sure what kind of wood it is, any ideas?

Looks similar grain to cherry--could it be a fruit tree?

ould be but seemed to be softer than cherry or maple.

I was thinking along the lines of pear or apple---I have not turned either, but they would be "common" in Michigan (as they are in Wisconsin).

Looks like it might be Box Elder. Took a tree down a few years ago and it looked a lot like that. Relatively soft as well.
