Great Idea Peter,
An enhancement suggestion, to prevent the drawer from rotating and spilling those "escapee pens" onto the floor, consider a narrow groove on one side of the drawer, and putting a piece of bent coat hanger wire into a 1/8" hole drilled inside the 1" hole near the entry, to act as a drawer guide.
