I have a Beall collett, but it is at my winter shop. I'm anxious to give lathe drilling a try and I'm looking for an alternative to the Beall. I have a Nova G3 chuck for my Jet mini that I've never taken out of the box. Can I use that chuck without buying an additional jaw set to do lathe drilling?

As long as you have a set of jaws that will hold a blank then it can be used . Either the step jaws or pin jaws can be used . The pin jaws hold a little more of the blank so are the best to use but either type will work .

I have the Nova G3 chuck and do my drilling on the lathe. I use a set of Nova JSPIN pin jaws, they really grip the blank well, nice and straight and it doesn't matter whether you have a round or square blank.

I also use the Nova G3 on my Jet mini.

I either use no jaws at all, or i use my $15 Nova soft jaws.
