Kalbarri Sandstone Formations in Clay.

This is a bit different, but I think it worked out pretty well, if I do say so myself.

I tried to replicate the Sandstone Formations in the Kalbarri National Park.

The first pic is the Formations in the flesh, 350million years old.

Next two pics are the wet clay, the colors were achieved with Iron oxide. Three colors and white/natural.

Last two are the end result, the firing process changed the colors.

Interesting idea, maybe try it with polymer clay and apply it to some turning.

I don't have a pottery wheel any longer but boy did I love it. Have you ever layered those and thrown them on a wheel? Might be cool.

No, I haven't tried that, but I did have a lot of trouble with the oxides wanting to blend into each other. Even had to watch the finger prints.

I like the approach..

It provides a flowing feel, maybe wind. The South west USA has many areas that create the same effect. Created by the effects of wind and rain and flowing waters over the years. They appear very similar to those you are capturing. If you continue to develop and refine this approach, I would be very interested in seeing where it takes you.
