In my experience Terry, Colorwood or some of the other names it goes by is a bit soft. I have a couple dozen cutoffs from gun stocks. I stabilize them before use, problem solved!! I seem to be stabilizing a lot of stuff lately. Grain direction can also cause tear out. Try a sheer cut with a bowl gouge, that may help...JMHO
Agreed, I have used that same blank with no problems sanding only to 600 grit.Help fix these problems..... first time turning this kind of blank.... night fire....sanded to 12000 then applied shellawax...where did the burn area come from at the cap....why the tear out....could I have filled it in with ca
Tear out is caused by tools not being sharp and or you were too aggressive.
