Hello All:

Is de-natured alcohol the best thing to use to clean the blank prior to starting the finishing process? Is there an issue with the water not evaporating? I have used lacquer thinner before, as that is what I have used in all of my flat work for years...is that OK as well. Thanks for any and all advice.

Don,

The wood does not know if it is flat or round! If you have been happy with lacquer thinner on flatwork, then it will be fine on pens. I personally do not like to use DNA due to the water issue and have had more instances of cloudy CA finishes when doing so than when using other methods. Most of the time I simply blow the blank off with 120 psi air pressure. When I do use a solvent, I usually use acetone or lacquer thinner.

what are some good alternatives for DNA? i've read something about acetone, but wouldn't that jeopardize your layers of ca if using it after sanding down ca coats? lacquer thinner sounds like a good alternative. i've also heard of using straight 91% rubbing alcohol?
