Thanks for the comments all. I found that board a few months ago at my favorite exotic wood retailer. I paid a hefty fee for it--- $50, but it yeilded nearly 40 pen blanks, so a buck and a hair per blank for this stuff is very reasonable (lol, no, I don't have any for sell[B)] sorry).

It is a open-grained wood, but with a small amount of CA as a sealer and a nice satin conversion varnish spray finish, it looks like nice natural wood with a very durable coating.
