I have been making some cartridge pens and am having some difficulty drilling out the bullet tips. I figured this gave me a reason to get something like the Beall chuck with the different collets. After some reading, I see various ER numbers associated with the collets. I assume the numbers relate to size or the range of sizes the chuck can hold. Anyway, what does the ER mean?

Thanks for your help.

Dario:

Thank you for your prompt reply. I have read that link, which got me looking on ebay where I saw several ER sized collets. I figure once one gets the chuck, one is commited to a particular ER size collet, but I still do not know what the ER means.

Thanks for your help.

No definition but here's a few links that gives more info.

"The penalty is that most collets can only accommodate a single size of workpiece. An exception is the ER collet which typically has a working range of 1 mm (about 0.04 inches)."

Series
* ER8 1mm-5mm in 0.5mm steps
* ER11 1mm-7mm in 0.5mm steps
* ER16 1mm-10mm in 1mm steps
* ER20 2mm-13mm in 1mm steps
* ER25 2mm-16mm in 1mm steps
* ER32 3mm-20mm in 1mm steps
* ER40 4mm-26mm in 1mm steps

The cheapest place to get these ER32 collets in from a person called 800WATT on Ebay. Many people here have bought fom him and the most popular set he has is an 11 piece set. He has many sets so winning a bid is not that difficult. Having said that, you will NOT receive any emails from this guy and shipping could take 2 to 3 weeks but you WILL get them and you will be satisfied. I've included the link here. The pic shown has the adapter with it that you would really not need if you had the beall but it shows the collets.
