Here is a box elder bowl I turned. Decided to make a lid for it and turned it out of poplar then ebinized it. The bowl has about 30 coats of lacquer then wet sanded and Beall buffed.

Nice work Dave.

I have never even thought of ebonizing poplar....looks very dark...how many times did you apply the ebonizer?

The black I used is the Transtent at Woodcraft. Mix it with alcohol not water so it dries faster. Then after about three coats turn the lathe on and rub with a paper towel. If you move quickly it will give a even black burnish look. Then finish off with lacquer.
The red and pink is the color in the wood. If you have not used boxelder before the color will turn brown if in the sun much so I airbrushed the color over the color in the wood that way if it ever fades the airbrush colors will stay.
