Before I make a few bottle stoppers I'm concerned about their quality. I heard/read that only stainless steel stoppers last when exposed to wine and that chrome will peel after time. I wouldn't want to give someone a stopper that only lasts for a short while - I would expect them to last for years.
Any place I can verify or debunk this? Thanks for your help

It is true. The acids in the wine will attack the finish on "non-stainless" stoppers IF left exposed to them for longer periods of time. If you give one to someone who used it for an open bottle for a couple of days, wipes any wine off, it will be pretty good. If they use it to stop wine for extended periods of time or always have an open bottle with the stopper in there will be problems.

I can confirm this, I don't drink but I cook with wine and I had bought some stoppers at a yard sale, I popped one in (red wine)and a year later the stopper looked like it had been sitting in acid. Shows you how often I use wine. LOL.
