I've seen some wooden ash trays and was thinking about trying to make one. I have never turned anything but pens.

What kind of finish would you put on it, or would you?

If you didn't finish it, what woods would work, or is it a stupid idea?

People still smoke?

A would recommend something very dense, like briar used for making pipes.

Or turn something to fit a glass ashtray into.

Heh, heh, heh. Not in California but travel to Florida or Texas. Lots of smokers here in Texas.

The best wood would be ash :)
:rimshot:

I would oil the wood. You can apply a finish to the outside and top surface, but the bowl I would just oil. It'll blacken over time from use, leaving the rest of the ashtray looking good.

Not a lot of smokers left here in CO. I fall off the wagon every so often and smoke a pack, but the smell really gets to me now. heh
