American Sweet Gum Bowl. Around 8" (20 cm) across but fairly shallow, almost a deep platter. Finished with Bush Oil and polyurethane.

Thanks everyone, I love how Sweet Gum looks with the right finish, but it does move a lot when drying, so I have to be very careful to leave adequate wall thickness.

Where did you happen to find that piece of timber? All I get around here for Sweetgum is a lot lighter toned....that's some seriously cool timber!

Well done on the turning too!!!!!

All of the Sweet Gum I've ever turned, I bought online from the southeast. Over the years, every piece I've ever turned had this dark multi colored look with pretty nice figure. Once turned, it is failrly bland looking, a sort of light grey/brown color, but once an oil finish hits it, it gets wild looking like this.

It always comes green, and moves a lot as it dries, so I have to leave it a little extra thick.
