I did not turn the platter, it came from Atlanta area turner Nick Cook. Another member of his artist studio campus did the graphics, and I did the laser engraving. Er, twice... :frown:

I messed up one of the kanji symbols - the bottom one, appropriately entitled "DO" (think: Doh!!), but Nick was able to remount the piece on his Powermatic 4224B (how many here besides Russell can mount a 23" platter over the lathe bed?) and shave down the center portion, and then I was able to (correctly) re-engrave it.

Made from sapele - a beautiful wood with some great chatoyance (shimmer), and it laser engraves very evenly.

Looks like tricky work to me. Great stuff. Thanks for sharing

More than you might know Tom - the platter was bigger than my engraver, so I had it hanging out the front panel, had to make registration marks so I could rotate the platter and graphic the same, and burn it in sections.
