Vacuum pump suggestions

I am starting to look around for a dedicated vacuum pump. I really don't have any knowledge in this area. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good pump?

While looking, most pumps show the vacuum that they produce in microns, I am only familiar with "inches of mercury". Are these two measurements the same? Is there a formula to convert microns to in-hg if they are not. Lastly, what is a good micron and/or in-hg rating for vacuum impregnating/stabilizing and dying?

Although the primary purpose is to vacuum clamp wood when applying veneer, the various pumps can be used in other applications. Some use existing compressors and others are stand alone.
