I redesigned my shop with two things in mind. First, giving the ability for my 12 year sons with learning differences to make there own pen from blank creation to finished pen independently (with my supervision and mentoring). Ultimately, that includes truly custom, one of a kind kit less pens with their own hardware made in the shop. We're not there yet, but that is the direction. Second, maximize space in a in 4/5 of a garage bay.

As far as equipment, there is some redundancy for two reasons. There are three of us using the shop and also, it is easier for them to have some tools dedicated. Ex. A dedicated lathe for drilling blanks. Much easier for them considering some of their issues.

This is still a work in progress but were getting there.

Main Equipment:

2 Pal Pal Lathes
Turncrafter Commander 10" Variable Speel Lathe
Rockler Excelsior 5-Speed Mini Lathe (for drilling blanks)
Rikon 10" Band Saw
Grizzly G8688 Mini Metal Lathe, 7 x 12-Inch
Byrnes 4" Table Saw
Byrnes Disc Sander
Taig 4 Axis CNC (in process of setting up)
FlashForge 3d Printer Creator Pro (in my office)
Matter and Form MFS1V1 3D Scanner (in my office)
Proxxon 37110 Micro Mill MF 70
Excalibur Scroll Saw 16 inch
2 POWERTEC AF4000 3 SPD Air Filtration
Oasis Machinery DC2000 Heavy Duty 2 HP Wood Dust Collector W/ Hepa
Shop Fox W1826 Wall Dust Collector 1HP
6" TurnTex "JuiceProof" Vacume Chamber
Best Value Vacs Brand 7 CFM Two Stage Vacuum Pump
Best Value Vacuum Chamber
2 Pressure Pots

Feedback Welcome!

Awesome. Everything is little. It's like the shop was designed to make pens. My shop is different, everything is designed to handle medium to large stocks of wood. I feel funny segmenting a pen blank on an 18" band saw or a 12" sliding miter saw, but its what I got.

Good setup. My only criticism is the tools hanging in front of the lathe points up would have me poking holes in my hand. I'm a klutz that way. Points down and I would knock them off and the holes would appear in my feet.

You know what I see??? I see your very own little sweatshop:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin: Get these kids to produce or else they have to wash that car:)

Great for the kids and if supervised could be a step to larger things and who knows what that may be. Good luck to all. Have fun and keep those lathes spinning.

This is a wonderful design. And as the boys grow so can the shop. All you need to do is put up another garage for the car/SUV.

It looks compact but I can also see that both boys can work together and still enough room for Dad to be doing other things. The multi lathes are what work for you.....don't have to explain the reasons. I understand them completely. When the time is right you can get bigger pieces and then use the lathes for other things.

Your design is solid for your needs. When they change, you have many ways to go with what you have. Well done Phil.
I will keep looking for more posting from those boys of yours.....they do great work.

Question About Pressure Pot

I just dropped my pressure pots into my bench.

The Question: Do I need to support them from underneath or can they just rest on their hinges?

Thanks,

Phil
