Right form the local newspaper. Pooler is mostly over "swamp land".

Pooler, Georgia Daily News Story....********

*

Only in Georgia !!!****

*

* Two local men were injured when their pickup truck left the road and struck a tree near* Highway 21 early Monday. Effingham County Deputy David Lewis* reported the accident shortly after midnight last Monday.

*

Thurston Poole, 33, of Pooler, and Billy Ray Wallis, 38, of Rincon, both GSU graduates , were returning to Rincon after a frog-catching trip. On an overcast Sunday night, Poole 's pickup truck headlights malfunctioned. The two men concluded that the headlight fuse on the older-model truck had burned out. As a replacement fuse was not available, Wallis noticed that the 22 caliber bullets from his pistol fitted perfectly into the fuse box next to the steering-wheel column. Upon inserting the bullet the headlights again began to operate properly, and the two men proceeded on eastbound toward Ricon.

*

After traveling approximately 20 miles,* the bullet apparently overheated, discharged and struck Poole in the testicles. The vehicle swerved sharply right, exited the pavement, and struck a tree. Poole suffered only minor cuts and abrasions from the accident but will require extensive surgery to repair the damage to his testicles.** Wallis sustained a broken clavicle and was treated and released.

*

"Thank God we weren't on a bridge when Thurston shot his balls off, or we might be dead," stated Wallis.

*

"I've been a deputy for 10 years in this part of the state, but this is a first for me. I can't believe that those two would admit how this accident happened," said Deputy Lewis.

*

Upon being notified of the wreck, Lavinia ( Poole 's wife) asked how many frogs the boys had caught and did anyone get them out of the truck?*******

UGA Grads would have just taken the fuse from the radio.... OR, used a "rim fire" cartridge. WE certainly WOULD NOT have used a center fire cartridge.... You can fire a pistol cartridge (center fire) with a grill lighter....GEEZ!

Mike, I'm just assuming it was a center fire 22 mag (Hornet) That is the pistol of choice for frog gigging, because "Mr no shoulders" (cottonmouths) like frogs, too. Sometimes instead of "pulling up a bull frog" you get a snake. The center fire 22 mags do a good job on the snakes.

Besides that, the 22 Hornet ammo fits right into the fuse holder of a 72 chevy PU. DAMHIKT:)

I don't THINK you can heat a rim fire enough to make it fire, but I AIN'T putting one in the fuse holder..... Just to see.

Andy with all due respect, a rim fire 22 round will go off when heated. Please DAMHIKT, PLEASE.

ROTFLMAO! I'll take your word for it, Charles!

Funny thing about this news story. Did you notice that Billy Ray was the one who had the .22 (whether it was rim fire or CF), Billy Ray WAS the one who discovered that the ammo would fit it the fuse clip? BUT, in the interview with Billy Ray, it was THURSTON who caused all of the problems.

I'll bet their friendship will never be the same, especially if BILLY RAY TOOK THE FROGS!

Back in the mid 80's I was renovating a house that my Dad rents out. The previous tenant had caught it on fire and it had to be gutted. There was a nice plate steel wood stove in the house when I started the job and as it was November when I got started one of the first things I did was take out one of the windows and put a sheet of metal in and ran a stove pipe chimney. A few days later I decided to start a fire in the stove to warm the place up. I got the fire burning, closed up the stove door and set about tearing out some damaged wood. About 20 minutes later I heard a loud bang then another, quickly followed by a barrage of what clearly sounded like gun shots. It sounded like a drive by with automatic weapons from a movie. I hit the deck and was doing my best to claw through the floorboards. after about a minute the shooting stopped. I check myself for holes and stains and found I was alright. There were no holes in the walls or windows of the house. I could not figure out what was going on but the noises had definitely sounded like they were in the house with me. The only thing I could figure was something was in the wood stove. When the stove cooled off that evening I pulled the stack off it and reached around inside. Sure enough there was a bunch of spent brass and some melted lead inside. There was a baffle plate along the top of the stove. It seems the previous tenant had decided to stash a couple boxes of 9mm cartridges in the stove but forgot about them when he left. He must have put them on top of the baffle plate through the smoke outlet as there was nothing in the fire box before I started the fire. I was just glad nobody was there with a video camera that day. I never would have lived it down.

Well He was driving a truck, and the fuse for his........ Err NM

Lewis Black is one of my favorite comedians and this is one of the funniest stories he tells. I love the fact that Lavinia is so concerned about the frogs rather than the boys.

That's funny. we get some dumb and funny stuff around here, but that's about the best one yet.
I like the wife's main concern, about getting the frogs out, and the friend's comment about him blowing his balls off. Lots of love man, straight from the heart LOL

It sure will. We used to set them off with a Railroad Fuse (pronounced Fus-ee). And btw it is the case that flies not the bullet.

This is a really old one! I first herd it as a child, yes myth busters did a segment on it......had to be 6 years ago thats the last time we had a TV. They found it was impossible at truck voltages but had no issue getting the shell to go off at higher levels!

Thing that has always got me is why didn't they use a spent shell? Most rednecks I know are expert duct tape engineers and what red neck doesn't have a spent 22 shell on the floor of his truck!?!?

A UGA grad (a REAL redneck engineering school - the Ag engineering department has a course on duct tape and another on bailing wire) would have just taken the fuse from the radio.... OR broken off the radio "aerial " and jammed a piece in the fuse holder....it fits! DAMHIKT:)

Does anyone remember a truck that had fuses for the headlights? most of the vehicles I knew the head lights were not fused with a tubed fuse in the fuse box. And I remember starter solinoid switches on the floor boards.

Whaddya mean "remember" floorboard starter switches? Your truck doesn't have one? It keeps getting in my way when I try to stomp the headlight dimmer switch:)

I heard on our radio (before it blew a tube) that they now how vehicles with tailgate warmers! THAT AIN'T NO TRUCK! That's a yuppy hauler!

Tongue firmly in cheek:)

Maybe the spent ones were all shorts and he needed a long rifle.....

As an alumnus you might want to point out that bailin war has been on the way out for about 65 years:biggrin::biggrin:
