Hi everyone,
I've got a couple of used lengths of this stuff (10' x 3" x 1" thick), they are in perfect condition. I know at least one common use for these things, use as friction pads on trucks with a sliding tray. I remember that this stuff is/was damn expensive, is trough as steel and slippery as ice. Once I was told that this friction pads were made of Teflon, reason for the hight costs, not sure if in our days, there is another sort plastic/acrylic now made for this purpose.
I cut a short piece (about 4") and turn it as I do with all the samples I make, notice that if trying to cut too much (used finger nail gouge) at one time the piece will start the shatter and ripping pieces out, messing the blank quite badly, this wasn't too important as I still had plenty of "meat" to go so, I put one of my tungsten 12mm tipped gouge and if just cut like butter. I have tried a few tools, they are cut if very sharp and removing small quantities at the time. The "stepped" disc grinder does also work well with this stuff.
Anyway, I'm just wondering if anyone can recognize this stuff and confirm if possible if is Teflon or not. The colour is that "faint" blue, I always remember to see that colour on the sliding pads on trucks so, this stuff has been around for a while...! This would be ideal to make those special bushes and pads to put on your pen press, if you use a home made one, many other used comes to mind including, making pens out of it. Maybe use to make heavy duty pen handling, on a tough kit for people like carpenters, plumbers, electricians, mechanics, etc, etc, etc...!
The product finishes well without any product, I just gave it a coat of the Floorseal to see how it would come out, after dry I tried to scratch it out with my finger nails, and never marked it...!
I will put some for sale soon but not until a confirm if is Teflon or not, at the moment I'm only trying to figure out what it is!
Did spend a bit of time searching on the web but I obviously didn't use the right wording, the results I've got weren't what I was expecting!
So, what you think it is...????
Cheers
George
