While I love the color and grain of wenge after its turned I am having an issue with finishing it without collecting crap (dust, polishing compound, etc) in the open grain of the wood. What is the best way to work with this wood?

Skew. Skip sandpaper.

I've sanded all mine and never had an issue. Just a bit of compressed air and cleaning it off really well with denatured alcohol.

I'm in the DNA and air camp also. Have to look close, especially when using porous wood, to make sure all the pores are cleaned out.
