Working in the basement...

I am thinking of moving a small lathe into the basement to be able to produce even when the weather is frigid. If any of you work in the house, what precautions do you use about keeping the dust centrally located? Will a shop vac aimed at the dust from sanding be enough or should I step it up??

Any comments would be really appreciated.

Hi - I have had my shop in the basement for 2 years with no dust problems in the rest of the house. I use a dust collector at the lathe and also dust collect at the drill press. So, most of my dust is collected as it happens. Only time I have lots of dust in the shop is when I use the table saw to cut pen blanks. I do have doors on the shop, so I can close it off from the rest of the basement and this contains the dust.
 
My entire workshop is in the basement. [8D] I have a central vac (Delta) and use a portable shop vac on the mini lathe and band saw. I also have an air cleaner at the bottom of the stairs to catch the fine dust prior to going up. At the suggestion of the person who cleans my furnace, I have a plastic curtain between the shop area and the furnace and water heater. This is only on one side so free air is able to get to them. I am very fortunate as my wife hass never complained about the dust. :D
 
My turning shop is in a sectioned off part of the basement as well. I have the shop vac taking dust directly from whatever machine I am using at the time. I also wear a dust mask for fine sanding as the air flow in the shop isn't the best. I do have a small air cleaner moving the air around in the shop but, according to the filter, it's not catching much.
 
I want to thank you all for your suggestions...I am going to be moving a lathe into my basement...I have a really small work room in their that will accomodate a lathe and small drill press so I think I can make it work at least until the chill of the winter wears off. Thanks for all the useful information and I will upload a pic of the workspace, lathe and pens as soon as I get started.

My shop has been in the basement forever. I've used a big dust collector the last maybe 10 years and it does help to get most of the bigger stuff. There is still fine dust that gets all over eveything. Nothing goes upstairs except what I track up the stairs. The only thing I have to remember is to change the furnace filter every month.
 
Hi, i have had basement shops forever to. No dust up stairs at all.But then again i didn`t have forced hot air heat.i had elec. and HW heat in the houses i`ve own.It nice when it is 0 out and its comfy..And to go down late at night when every body is asleep,. Carl
